One of my favorite from last weekend. Slight crop to get rid of some background clutter. What's going on with that pinky?

Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS, Canon 40D, cloudy overcast day - damn cold for fall soccer.

More info about the shot on the blog listed in the .sig.

She is being a little lady of course!

Great shot! Maybe straighten the field line a little?

Where are the pick cleats? :)

cheers,
Michael

Hey Michael,

I just noticed the tilted field... gotta fix that.

This shot was down in Holliston on the artifical-turf field on Marshall street. Nice field to shoot soccer on, although if we ever play there again it will be too soon.

This is great. What did you set your camera to to freeze the action? I am still working on learning this method

That's funny Scott, my youngest's Stars U12 team played the Eagles there on Sunday at 4pm - BRRRRRRR. Nice turf though. Those fields were the flatest fields I've ever seen!

Cheers,
Michael

I had to deal with very harsh late afternoon lighting (note the loooong shadows). Here is a U12 on that same field on Sunday, no extended pinky :)

Jennifer, take a look at my series of articles on "Practical Guide for Youth Soccer Photography (external link)". Part B has the technical info on how to set-up your camera/exposure to stop the action. Take a look at Part A too for tips on how to actually shoot kids playing soccer.

cheers,
Michael

It should. The main differences will be that ballet will be under artificial/indoor light and the action is not as "fast". I have shot my daughter's dance recitals and you can take the shutter speed down to 1/200sec for all but the very fastest moves, 1/500sec should be good for most everything. Soccer is a difficult sport to develop a sense of timing for, you really need to know the game plus the action is constantly moving and changing direction. Dance is more predictable, which helps you anticipate the shot.

cheers,
Michael

I agree with you about the lighting. Causes a problem most of the time. I also had to learn about everything you did with soccer. They don't slow down! I only hope that one of these days I will be able to learn how to freeze motion. I have been trying to learn for MONTHS! But it will come.... I can FEEL it!! I can't wait to take the time to read more into your artical.... Thanks!!!
