Unfortunately, it has to be that cold to shoot eagles here where I live. I have been out in it many times the last two winters, and if you dress for it, it's not that bad. Especially when you have a warm van to hop back into every few minutes.

I heard it a lot growing up in Michigan, but I don't hear it very often here on the East Coast. Must be a northern mid-west thing.

At 20 Below, your face is frozen, your teeth don't chatter. The less you have to move it, the better. Prolly is just easier to say with a frozen face. ;)

I would have to agree with you, having been in Canada at 20 below with 20 windchill (equivalent of -40), its not easy moving your face at all! Prolly best to use single syllables :p

It always puzzles me why people write 'prolly' instead of 'probably'. Is that the way they say it?

Roy, Roy, Roy.... You've done it again! Another slang/spelling thread!

I'd say it's probably because they are lazy typists, as well as lazy speakers. It's kind of like Brits writing/saying "brolly" intsead of "umbrella."

As to the cold theory, hogwash! Those namby-pambies should try northern Greenland in the winter! I haven't yet tried Antarctica in the winter, but I understand it gets a bit brisk there, too.

LOLOL, I'd like to hear you say namby-pamby with your face frozen into a plank.

I understand all this, accents, understanding and the like - but why do people write 'prolly' instead of 'probably'? Is it supposed to be humorous?

I'll second that. It's likely to just be a shortened, slang/lazy version.

I wouldn't lose any sleep about it :)

Whenever my faze was frozen into a plank, I kept my damned mouth shut! Chit-chat was for later, after a couple of cuppas!
