5D randomly firing the shutter? What?!

Hey folks. Long time appreciator of this forum, but I just now signed up for the first time.

I had a major problem today out at a shoot. My 5D started randomly firing. Without touching the release button, the camera would start going into rapid fire until I tapped the release to stop it. Then, following that, the camera would no longer auto focus and sometimes wouldn't fire at all on command. If I turned off the camera and turned it back on, the problem would go away for a while, then come back.

Originally, I had a battery grip on it with two batteries. When the problem started happening, I took the grip off because I had doubts about the unit's health. Still having problems. So, I switched out the battery for a fresh one. Still having the problem. Changed the CF card. Still had the problem. I had it all throughout the aperture range, still having the problem. I had two different lenses attached, having the same problem with both.

The only attachment I didn't remove was a PocketWizard which I needed for the lights. So, it seems that the problem is narrowed down to the PocketWizard or the body itself. Does anyone know what's going on here? Is it even possible for a PocketWizard to cause the camera to start firing off randomly?

Unfortunately, on 20D/30D that behaviour indicates broken shutter mechanism. Probably it is the same with 5D. You should send it to service center .

Well, remove the pocket wizard, lens, the main battery and the clock battery, leave things be for a while, then put it back together without the pocket wizard, and see what happens.
