I've always done my studio shoots with my 350D tethered to my laptop for quick and accurate review of the shots - you can't beat remote shooting in my opinion. I recently purchased a 40D and this afternoon to my surprise i read in the manual that the 40D does NOT do remote shooting, can this be true, am I reading it correctly? The manual says that only the 350D and the 20D can do remote shooting, surely this is a mistake..... I miss remote shooting already :(

Can anybody help to clarify this issue for me?

Thanks heaps
Cyrus

Well, that sounds mighty odd - my 50D supports remote shooting, and as far as I know every Canon camera in recent memory does - my 400D does it too.

The 50D has the added bonus of remote live-view shooting too. I'm of the impression that your 40D has that too.

(By remote shooting, I'm referring to plugging it into a PC via USB to control it and transfer pictures directly. That's what you're referring to, right?)

Canon: EOS 50D, EOS 400D, EF 300mm f/4L IS USM, EF 50mm f/1.8 II, EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II, EF 1.4X Extender, Speedlite 430EX
Sigma: 10-20mm f/4-5.6, 55-200mm f/4-5.6 | Tamron: 17-50mm f/2.8 | Manfrotto: 055 XPROB tripod, 680B monopod, 804RC2 and 486RC2 heads
Kenko extension tubes, Sandisk Extreme III 2GB + 8 GB & Ultra II 4GB

yep that's exactly what I'm referring to, I thought for sure that the 40D would remote shoot but when I plugged it in the lcd screen kept saying 'busy' so I checked the manual and it said that 40D does not support it... i think that has to be an error and the 'busy' message must be something i have to figure out.

It works on my 40d - have you loaded the software that came with the camera?

I'll hook mine up and check but I think it is the EOS Utility that you need.

Where in the manual does it say that the 40D doesn't support remote (tethered) shooting. The 40D is most certainly capable of tethered shooting including liveview operation via the PC. You will need EOS Utility installed however and the drivers for the 40D. I'm assuming your operating system is either Windows XP or Vista.

The utility is named the "EOS Utility". Just hooked mine up - works perfectly including letting you activate live view on the computer.

it definitely says it, i'm looking at the digital manual right now - having said that I think when i was checking what software i had installed perhaps i was only seeing that the old software for the 350D was installed on my laptop and not the new versions that came with the 40D... i know they were installed on my desktop so perhaps that's where the confusion started (and hopefully ends) I'm installing the newer version of the software on my laptop now so hopefully that will solve the problem. Fingers crossed - and I'll be feeling kinda silly and relieved ;)

OK now I've got it working, but only the EOS 40D utility window and remote shooting way but I want to use Zoombrowser FX because I liked the way it worked, does this mean that I can't use ZBFX now because i can only use the EOS utility?

Try the preference tab at bottom lhs of eos utility screen, then there is a "Linked Software" tab at the rh end. Maybe you can link your software there.
