I have a Canon 40D and Photoshop CS2. CS2 will not handle RAW files from the 40D. Can anyone tell me if Photoshop Elements 7 will handle 40D raw files? If so, any pros and cons on making the switch from CS2 to Elements. Look forward to your suggestions:confused:

Have you tried Adobe Photo Elements 6.0? I updated w/ lastest 5.1 plug in just today. Haven't tried it out but it should work.

Oh Hai!

I remember reading somewhere that CS2 can't open 40D RAWs. You have to convert them from RAW to DNG using a free converter from Adobe.

I think this link is for the RAW to DNG converter: http://www.adobe.com …sp?ftpID=3732&fileID=3494 (external link)

Other option is to upgrade to CS3. Don't know about Elements.

I use DPP for converting my 40D raws and then send to CS2 for most of the editing.

^^ Ditto, I either send directly to CS2 from DPP or convert to 16 bit tiff after I've done what I want in RAW so I can open them in Bridge for further editing with PS. This is in fact usually what I do, it just seems a little quicker for me. I usually do a bunch of RAW work at one time, and then at a later time I will do the whole PS thing to images I feel need more work. For a lot of my images I'm very happy with what I get out of DPP so they never go into PS for further work.

I use LightRoom (although I did recently upgrade to version 2) to upload, sort and upload photos to PhotoShop. My 40D has not caused me any problems. I have found the LightRoom is more than capable for most of the editing that I do, however I do occasionally edit in PhotoShop.

This is the problem with a Adobe is that they completely drop old versions.

I also use the Adobe DNG converter. I'm using Lightroom 1.3 though but I have to convert the raw files for my D700 as lightroom 1 doesn't support the D700. So I'm in the same boat.

I'm also still on CS2. I see no reason to upgrade so I haven't.

I use CS3 and have never had a problem. Now I'm glad I didn't get CS2 b/c I wasn't aware of this issue.

You will find the same problem if you upgrade your Camera say next year - CS3 (ACR) will not handle the raws and you will have to upgrade to CS4. :)
This is how the likes of Adobe make their money.

Lovely! I guess I just assumed that new camera info was part of what came with those ACR updates I've been downloading.

The updates will include new cameras for a while but every couple of years or so you will have to upgrade the CS version. As CS4 is already out you will find that the ARC updates for new cameras will only be incorporated into CS4 at some time. This is what happened to the 40D raws and CS2, Adobe just stopped supporting it for new Cameras.
