I've been doing some side by side testing of the 40D and the 50D just for fun and I've noticed that the 50D is much more sensitive to sensor dust than the 40D. It shows up at a lower aperture and it has much more defined edges. The pic below is a jpen straight from the camera, no dust data defined. The top pic is taken at f/8 and the shadow is clearly visible. The bottom at f/16 and it's almost sharp. Look like Canon is still installing dust at the factory just so we have something to do when we open the box. ;)

Anyway, anyone else notice this? Or am I just being to anal?

I don't get it, why would pixel density affect sensor dust showing up? Aren't you going to see the same thing (with 50% less res) with the 40D?

I don't know, that's why I posted. I wouldn't think that there would be that much of a difference but I know that with my 40D that dust below f/22 needed all kind of PS tricks to make it pop out. With the 50D at f/16 it's very noticeable without any type of processing. It sort of surprised me.

Maybe it's just a big dust spot or it's oil/grease complimentary of the factory. My 30D came with a nice oil slick on it when it was brand new. Nothing like voiding the terms of the warranty in the first week with a good wet clean.

Yes, I pretty much expect that any camera coming from Canon is going to have factory installed dust. I know my 40D and XTi both did though my XT came clean. I was figuring I'd give the camera a week or two to finish spraying lube all over the place and then clean it, but still, I didn't expect to see it that clearly. If I hadn't known about sensor dust I would have freaked.

Have you had a look at just how big a spot it is? It really may just be a huge spot on the sensor.

When you view the dust at 100% it will appear to be significantly larger than it would on the 40D because it's comprised of more pixels!

As far as what aperture it would be visible at, it probably depends on what it is and how big it is -- and it would likely show up one the 40D at that aperture as well.

Unless you're able to compare the exact same dust spots on the sensor of both cameras this comparison would be pointless. Since you can't do that this comparison is pointless.
