It's not **** nor should this become a bashing thread, I'm just curious and wondering if higher pixel density somehow could contribute to dust being more visible at lower apertures. It's not a big deal and I have no aversion to cleaning my sensors. I have done so for years and will do so in a few days on this one as well as soon as things settle in a bit.

But thinking about it a bit, it seems to me that with the smaller pixel pitch means more pixels would be covered by the same size piece of dust, or more pixels are affected by the dust shadow at larger apertures thus making it more visible.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

Ya know, I think I'm off base. I just went back and reviewed a bunch of old pics and found one with a dust speck that looks very similar. Low and behold, it was taken at f/8 so I guess that depending on the nature of the speck, being that clear at f/16 is very possible.

I'm very anal about dust and clean my sensor about every other month, sometimes more often depending on where I've been shooting so I don't see dust all that often.

Yes it was. My apologies. I hate dust and keep my sensors sparkling clean so evidently I rarely ever see it except when shooting a high aperture which I also do rarely.

Don't quit now, John! You started it, you gotta follow up.

Take a nice new Sharpie and put a dot on both the 40D and 50D sensors and compare the images.

I'd do it myself but I have only one camera...

50D - 17-55 f/2.8 IS - 18-55 IS - 28-105 II USM - 60 f/2.8 macro - 70-200 f/4 L - Sigma flash

I think I've done enough damage. ;):) Anyway, the 40D is all packed up and ready to head out to the post office tomorrow morning headed to it's new home with a nice, shiny just cleaned sensor.
