My wife has an old (1990) Canon Rebel S, film camera. She still loves it. She wants an external flash for bouncing light off the ceiling or using a diffuser. I know the current Canon flash line (220EX, 430EX and 580EX) say they are compatible with all EOS camera's, but does that extend back to the Rebel S days? I also wonder if they would be overkill and if there was older version I could look for on ebay to fit the need. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Since no one else has answered your question, I'll give it a try.

Today's EX series Canon Speedlites will work, as well as some of the popular aftermarket brands such as the Sigma EF-530 Super. Such a unit might be a good investment if you also have, or plan to purchase a Canon digital SLR.

My guess is the EZ series Speedlites would also work. Take a look at the instruction manual for the camera and see what it says.

Another option would be a non-dedicated automatic flash such as the Sunpak 383 or Vivitar 285HV. These units aren't quite as flexible and require a bit of knowledge to use, but it's a viable alternative.
