Which one takes better photos? I am torn on which one to replace my 10d. I have read a lot of stuff comparing the two, and know all the differences in features and durability. But the most important thing to me is which one takes better photos.

I have looked at the comparometer on the IR website, and the 450D still life photo looks better. Then I compared the studio photos on dpreview, and the 40d ones look nicer.

Anyone out there own both? Can you take a side by side comparison pic for me?

"better photos"? In terms of image quality, there is so little between them I wouldn't base the purchase on this, both provide excellent image quality right up to iso 1600.

I'd choose the 40D over the 450D due to the better handling with the dual wheels, the ergnomics, where the 40D feels better in the hand, the larger viewfinder of the 40D, aswell as better autofocus (all cross type) and the 2x as fast continuous shooting rate. I think all of these will contribute to you getting "the shot" more times with the 40D than the 450D. That doesn't mean to say that the 450D isn't a very capable camera, but the 40D is in the next line above for a reason, and it is the better camera overall.

Go with the 40D and you won't be disappointed, it's at a bargain price at the moment...you can't really lose out!

Canon 5D and a few nice lenses. Sony RX100 is there too! :)

If you shoot still life get the 450D, if you shoot studio get the 40D.
Sorry I don't have both so I can't offer a comparison picture.

My 'better photos' I mean which one has the nicer looking images, in terms of contrast and clarity and color. I guess I have always been frustrated by my 10d photos, they are dark and dull, and always need adjusting in photoshop to make them look better. I have used my brother's 400d and the photos generally look better, and need a lot less work in photoshop. I know the 450d and 40d use the same digic III sensor, I just wonder how much of a difference there is between the two. I have heard a few people mention the 450d takes better photos, and there's even a few mentions of this in the review on dpreview.

I have the 450D and justifying which one is better is a big toss up in IQ... It all plays on the glass you have and the conditions you are shooting... Go to the camera store and bring your best Lens with you. I also suggest also bring one of your CF cards and a SD card to save the images. I want to add take a picture of the same subject, with the same settings and the same position you took the pic in... Then bring the cards home to compare. Waiting for someone to have both camera's and have or will take the time to do the actual test for you, might take awhile... And plus you might not know if they are telling the truth...

I read a post somewhere about a review of a canon camera on dpreview, the poster had checked the exif data on the pictures to find they were from a Nikon .

Only you can make the choice, but I have read people say there is little or nothing between the 40d and 450d in terms of image quality.

If you are used to the 10d does the 450d fit in your hand okay? Might be worth having a play wth one to make sure its comfy

IQ difference? I couldn't see much difference between my 350D and my 40D but hold either of them and you'll quickly make up your mind.

I have both cameras and believe I did some comparison testing back in the spring. I found no real difference in sharpness with both set to the same settings. What I did find in my case is that the 40D takes more conservatively exposed pics with more contrast. This is an obvious difference in tonal curves used within each camera. The 40D will leave a deep blue sky just as I see it, the XSi will slightly overexpose turning the sky a medium blue. This is with the same lens/shot within the same time frame.
I use the XSi when I want to grab something light and compact. However, my go to camera for specific events (horse races, air shows, family pics, etc..) is the 40D.
Get the 40D! It is a better all around camera in my opinion and for the reasons listed above.

if you own and like the 10D get the 40D cuz it has the wheel! i wish the xsi had it =( but isn't the memory cards the same too? that should get the seal to the deal right?

Personally I find the ergonomics and general feel of my 40D so much nicer to use and handle than my old 450D. I would definately head out to a camera store though and have a feel.

If you are concerned ONLY about image quality though, and don't already have some nice glass, go for the 450D and get some nice glass :D

I have both cameras and with the same lens and the same settings under most conditions IQ is nearly identical.

I always choose the XSI for hiking long distances where weight is an important factor and the 40D for almost everything else.

The 40D has a lot of distinct advantages, bigger viewfinder, the wheel, ISO 3200, better auto-focus, bigger buffer and a faster burst rate, but weight is not one of them over the XSI.

Actually I like them both very much.

Try them out side by side and see which one you prefer.

As others have said, since the 50D was introduced the 40D is a real bargain these days. In the $700 range for the body it's hard to go wrong.

If you use the same lens the difference will be immeasurable and of no importance.
However the 40D is a better made and better to use camera, and for that reason alone you will find you get a higher proportion of winners with it.
