Now that TD's getting him hooked on birds, too, I'd guess that something long is on the list.

I used to think that my 100-400 was as long as I could ever imagine needing. This time of year I begin to remember why people use longer glass. Then I remember how much the $$$ skyrockets to go from the already substantial 100-400 to any of the long primes and shake my head.

Dood, he's not "getting" me hooked on birds.... it's already a done deal.
I grew up fishing and hunting. From now on I'll hunt with a camera. Shooting with a camera involves the skills of hunting and shooting with a gun and carries the same enjoyment, but you don't have to deal with repressing the sadness that often comes with killing an animal.

Hunting with a camera is an interesting concept...hunting with a gun is still off the table. I might make a trip to NY for a couple of days of deer season after all.

you know, I was just reading nicksan's problem with the 50L and canon's customer service. (they finally ended up telling him that the focus shift was part of that particular lens and listed in the description...however obscurely). In other words, suck it up...$1400 worth. After the M3 incident (where they've effectively said "we're doing no more to make this camera work like it should") and their stance on the 50L which has effectively been badly designed and still on the market...

My point...doesn't it make any of you hesitant about trying their new stuff? Maybe I'm just gunshy but I don't remember customer service being this bad in the past. There is no service now. Just bandaids and if it doesn't work...the "oh bummer" phase.

I don't have much time for golf anymore. Plus I've fallen out of practice. We were Bronx Champions for the two years that I was on the team. Made it to the Semis for the city both years, but that's as far as we got. Now you're more likely to find me at the bowling alley than on the green.

Hobbies are expensive. I just realized how many I have. I'm surprised I'm not typing this from a cardboard box.

No hesitation at all in buying new Canon products...read some of the noink horror stories...they are out there. When you are dealing with technology, at some point you have to realize that there are limitations. It wasn't all that long ago that we were content to manually focus lenses....and were amazed when a camera could adjust the aperture automatically!

Depressing getting the new B&H catalog a few weeks ago and I didn't need anything. Wanted a ton of stuff, but not really agonizing over any new purchases. Anyone else feel like one more thing is too much for a bag? ;)

You'd have to be foolish not to be at least a little skeptical right now. I am very happy not to have seen any nightmare stories about the 5DII from any of the early testers, but it wouldn't surprise me in the least for there to be something.

As far as lenses go, they've had new lens issues for a while (the 70-300 IS had a recall/redesign, the 24-105 had a recall/redesign, too), so I don't know that what we're seeing now is really any different. The key is that people are so much more aware of the potential for issues in the wake of the M3.

Sounds like you have some real talent. Golf is a great sport but it's become very expensive. When I lived in Las Vegas during the 80's, I could play 18 holes of twilight golf for $9.00 at a couple of the courses.

Just saw that George Carlin video, Dan. That's such a stereotype. Most of the people I know that play golf just like it because it's relaxing and are far from being "elite", though admittedly you need some money to get started and for green fees. There are cheaper options and courses though. I like extreme sports and contact sports as much as the next person, maybe more (I rock climb, practice judo, jujitsu, kendo, muay thai, and a handful of tamer sports like soccer), but there are times when I'm on the course that I feel more relaxed than anywhere else.

you know, I don't object to products not being able to do everything...what I object to is that products are advertised to do something (and priced accordingly) and fails to do it...well I think that either the product should be a: fixed to do what it was advertised to do, b: replaced with one that does c: recalled and refunded. If people would stand behind their products, it would inspire customer confidence.

Recently, I purchased a program from onone software. They had some flawed disks that didn't work...I wrote and they sent me another one. Then it didn't work. I wrote again and they called me. We troubleshooted on the phone and think we've got it worked out. They sent me a set of programs for my trouble. This program is still got some issues (I need to call back with the error messages) but the new ones work fine and their customer service has made me feel safe in buying from them.

I don't think the problem is unique to Canon, either. Being on the edge with any technology carries the potential for risk. When expectations tend to be so high, the chance for something not to reach those expectations pretty much guarantees that someone will find something to scream about. Whether that ends up being significant or not is another matter.

I'd have suggested another bag, but then I saw your gear list.:lol::lol:

I can't really say that I've got anything on my wish list right now. Maybe a TC? Lighting would be fun, but I really can't decide what way I'd want to go with it, so there's a lot of research left to be done there.
