I think he tendency when just starting with the flash is to try and "force" a good shutter speed through the use of ISO. But when you use the flash (using M on the camera), just set your shutter speed to the flash sync speed (1/250 on your camera, I believe) then adjust from there. Does that make sense?

Here's a recent example of that technique:

D'OH! Didn't look at the EXIF. Scott's on to something here.

Don't you just hate it when he's right.

My Santa shots were all bounced flash, ISO 800 around f/5.6 and 1/125th or so to try and get some of the tree lights and surrounding decorative lights.

I usually set my flash to +1/3 to +2/3, too, if I'm shooting indoor where the flash is going to be providing the most important light.

I've never used a Sigma flash like that - what are your 3 or 4 choices?

Off (hehehe), TTL, MH(igh), ML(ow)

I was in M.... But didn't totally connect/disconnect the idea in my head that I was inside and wouldn't need a higher ISO since *I* was setting the shutter speed. I couldn't get it to go to 1/250... I could only get it to 1/200...

Oh and I don't see a picture :(

Then 200 is your synch speed. You can even "underexpose" once you've set it at that and rely on the flash to be your light source. That way, if there is any ugliness in the background, it's minimized and just your subjects are lit up. Make sense?

Looks like Jennifer confirmed: 1/200 -- the earlier models were 1/160...

And Jen, keep it on TTL.
