You can even "underexpose" once you've set it at that and rely on the flash to be your light source. That way, if there is any ugliness in the background, it's minimized and just your subjects are lit up. Make sense? Synch speed? That is......?? But when you use the flash (using M on the camera), just set your shutter speed to the flash sync speed (1/250 on your camera, I believe) then adjust from there. Does that make sense? Here's a recent example of that technique:
