Then 200 is your synch speed. You can even "underexpose" once you've set it at that and rely on the flash to be your light source. That way, if there is any ugliness in the background, it's minimized and just your subjects are lit up. Make sense?

Synch speed? That is......?? I was underexposing... purely accidental mind you because I had taken this photo earlier in the morning....

I don't typically use that feature, but this couple wanted to limit their choices and not get overwhelmed.

I think he tendency when just starting with the flash is to try and "force" a good shutter speed through the use of ISO. But when you use the flash (using M on the camera), just set your shutter speed to the flash sync speed (1/250 on your camera, I believe) then adjust from there. Does that make sense?

Here's a recent example of that technique:

Looks like Jennifer confirmed: 1/200 -- the earlier models were 1/160...

And Jen, keep it on TTL.

TTL.... Um... Ok will do! (Not that I have a CLUE as to what that means but I'll use that mode from now on!)

Ok, I'm winging it here...someone (Scott) will correct me, I'm sure.

But sync speed is the maximum speed your shutter can move. When your flash fires at the same speed, you'll get full flash. Otherwise you'll end up with black bars or it won't even fire because you are exceeding the maximum capability of the shutter.

TTL = Through the Lens... Easiest way for me to explain it is to link to Wikipedia :-D http://en.wikipedia.org …Through-the-lens_metering (external link)

Thanks Alyssa! Never mind the power line that goes through it... I get great sunrises out my front door.... although... the trees/powerlines interupt the view far too much!
