Ok, I'm winging it here...someone (Scott) will correct me, I'm sure.

But sync speed is the maximum speed your shutter can move. When your flash fires at the same speed, you'll get full flash. Otherwise you'll end up with black bars or it won't even fire because you are exceeding the maximum capability of the shutter.

Close enough for Government work :-D

Oh, you know what?! That photo is hidden in smuggy! D'OH!

How about this?

QUOTED IMAGE

I don't typically use that feature, but this couple wanted to limit their choices and not get overwhelmed.

That's better! Nice photo! :)

Photographs are records of life. Pity they don't make music when you put them in a record player. :p

Thanks Alyssa! Never mind the power line that goes through it... I get great sunrises out my front door.... although... the trees/powerlines interupt the view far too much!

Wow...tough crowd tonight!

The point is that the room was completely dark, except for the tree lights. The room was underexposed (so it's dark and just the subjects are lighted).

It's late I'll have to figure that out in my head later.... that's as clear as mud to me....

That and my flash looks so artificial in my shots... yours.... looks very natural....

You know what will really help? Get Wool over there for about 30 minutes and practice. It will all make much more sense trying it rather than talking about it.

The room was dark because the walls were hideous building/apartment white (their living room).

Yes, I added the "bling" at their request (not my taste at all!). Glad you noticed it. They're announcing their engagement to their family with these shots so they wanted people to notice the ring. :)

When you've got a fully lit room, and particularly one lit with bad lighting, you're not going to be able to pull off quite the same technique as TD did.

There's actually another thread here that goes into it with some detail: https://photography-on-the.net …php?p=6893802&postcount=1

You might be able to minimize some of the background, if you've got enough distance between it and your subject, but it would be hard to really underexpose it enough unless you went very low on ISO, with a small aperture, and as quick a shutter speed as your camera will allow.
