Hi guys

With end of October, skiing World Cup season traditionally starts with men and women GS races on Rettenbach glacier above Soelden, Austria. This year we were quite lucky and weather was nice, except for women GS race, where clouds covered sky just where we would need blue sky to make photos look nice. But that's life :)

Here's few photos from both GS races.

Love the shots. I really like the way you crop some of them low and wide. Really seems to increase the perception of speed in the shots, low and fast.

Shots like this, and seeing the racing on the TV again is just making the three months until I am back in Austria on the mountain full time feel like an eternity away. :(

But then I will hopefully get a chance to put my new 100-400 through its paces when I am not working.

Stunning shots. So crisp! I don't know if the last one works as a silhouette,though..

Those are really phenomenal shots, esp. 4-7. I agree with Jim that I'm not sure #8 holds up with the rest, but really, stunning shots.

very nice and glad to see you back (we don't see ya enough during the "off" season). #3 and 4 are tops of this series imo. agreed with others, the last is a great effort but just doesn't do it for me.

Thanks for comments guys. I actually agree with you about last one. I didn't work best way, but I have excuse for this :)
Rules on World cup races for those few of us, who are allowed course access are quite strict. This means no moving during race, so changing positions between the race is, if not impossible, at least not really welcome by TD and others responsible for safe race. There's another rule telling we have to be on position 60mins before first start, and with glacier on north side of mountain, and sun still being high enough to pick over the mountain, guessing where sun will be in 1.5 hours is quite tricky.
So now to my excuse :) Because of previously mentioned rules, I picked left side of the course (when looking up the course). Sun was coming from left to right, so this gave me chance to get decent photos without sun shining straight into my lens. But on the other side, this was not best position for silhouettes as #8 is. For this, being on right side of the course would be much better. But because in first place I needed normal photos, I was playing with things like this only when I didn't need specific skier, I guess it's easy to find out why I choose "wrong" side of course.
So #8 is best I could get in given conditions, but I agree it's not really great. But season is long, and hopefully there will still be time to get something better looking :)

For me there's not much happening off season. Sure there's some cycling, some basketball, volleyball or soccer, but that's nothing special... at least for me :)
Skiing on the other side is cool, and I actually like to share these photos with others. Previously mentioned sports are just job, this on the other side is fun... and also job... so fun job for at least 5 or 6 months every year
Now all I need to do is to find out, how to survive whole year with shooting just this, and ski myself for next half of year

I wouldn't need to be millionaire if I could be able to do this. To be honest, I have no wish for millions. All I would want would be just enough for normal life, and to be able to afford summer time spent without shooting non interesting sports. Instead of this I would spend summer on alpine and xc skiing tracks
But I actually know one agency, where they were able to do just this. But for year or two, situation is skiing sport is not too bright. Due last few green winters, money is a bit short, so they actually need to work during summer too nowadays.

Primoz-

Once again, great stuff. Any chance you can share basic EXIF on 1 or 2 of the photos?
