Upgrading from XTi to a ??? 40D??? or 50D???

I will be purchasing a new camera body around Christmas time. I currently have the XTi and would like to know what would be the best step up from there.

Yes, the 40D will obviously be a money saving route to take, but does the 50D have any benefits that would justify spending the extra coin on?

I currently shoot night club shots, event photography, cruise vacation photography (usually 800+ pics per day), walk around stuff, day trips, etc..

I don't shoot weddings or sports.

The gear I have so far :
Canon 50 1.8
Tamron 17-50 2.8 (on the body about 90% of the time now)
Sigma 10-20
Canon 70-300 IS
Sigma 105 2.8 macro
430 EX (will be upgrading to 580II and the Ray Flash soon I hope)

So anything I should know to help influence my decision on why the 50D would be better than the 40D?

many thanks in advance as always.

A camera.

Interested to read the results. I want to add 40D but I think I will go 50D and my XTi will become backup.

I was in the same boat as you. I would have liked the 50D for the lens focus adjustment feature. and the new LCD. I dont care so much for the 15mp but it is a nice feature if you crop alot. I think it comes down to if those features are worth the 400$ price jump for you. From what ive seen images from both cameras seem equal. good luck with the decision.

BTW. with the 5d body prices still falling I have decided to go for it and spend the 1900$ on a new 5D. :D

I'm deciding the same thing. Until very recently the XTi was more than enough camera for me, but I'm finding I wished I had less noise and higher ISO. I'll probably go with a 40D as soon as I can because my budget is overextended already.

I currently us a 350D and am thinking about upgrading in the next couple of weeks and was looking at either a 40D or 50D but find myself swinging towards a 40..

Sure the 50D is the latest XXD, but most of the notable improvements thay have made I will be able to live without. For example the extra 5MP, I do try my hardest to get the image right in the view finder and never print larger than A4 so don't think I really need a 15MP at this stage.

The extra resolution on the screen would be nice, but again hardly essential.

Here in the UK (Unless someone can show me better) the cheapest I can find a 40D with 17-85 IS is £730 with a further £60 off from the rebate) where as the 50D with the same lens will cost me £1329, nearly double!! (want the kit lens as mine will be going with the 350D)

I am not professional by any standard and as such any money spent will be dead money, as in I will never see it again and for me it's just a hobby. With this being the case my personal best route I feel is the 40D and some better glass, which I could get in addition to a grip etc and still have change.

Just my thoughts......

I was on the same boat as you, and went for the 50D. What a helluva jump! No noise at 1600, very usable 3200. Burst mode is awesome, and still finding more things that astonishes me.

I would say go for it.

I am going to do the same thing. The resell interest of the XTi has significantly dropped as of late, so it doesn't really benefit me to sell it right now since they are going for low.

The 50D kit is just over £1100, although that's still a lot...

The 50D is still very expensive relative to the price of a 40D.

There are lots of good used 40D's selling in the $700 range.

The 40D is still a great camera. I'd go with that.

What is the time frame to see a price drop on the 50D?

6 months? 1 year?

Haven't watched pricing but the XTi and XSi dumped in price rather quickly.

I think the 40D is an amazing, awesome camera. It's definitely my favourite camera in my entire kit. It performs admirably in all situations. I like the fact that it doesn't have nearly as many pixels CRAMMED into that sensor as the 50D. I also like the fact that you can get it super duper CHEAP!!!

The higher res LCD screen really means nothing unless canon really bumps up the thumbnail preview resolution.

I'm so over the moon with the 40D that I'm not even interested in the 50D.
