Upgrading lenses may be an option after saving some money if the OP bought the 40D instead of the 50D. Not that much difference in the two cameras as others pointed out, but could save some money. I like the 50D better for many reasons, but really like the new LCD, the microadjust for lenses and I think the camera is faster to focus. The 50D just seems faster to me than the 40D, but that's just an opinion. For most of what I shoot the noise level of the 50D seems about the same as the 40D. The higher resolution (higher pixel density) of the 50D requires good glass if you crop a lot. IMO on a per pixel basis the image from the 50D will seem "softer" with everything except really good glass. The overall fully framed image will look about the same for the 40D and 50D unless you print very large pictures (20X30 or so). Hope that made sense. IMO you really won't see much difference in the printed images, unless you crop a small portion of the image and then make an "enlarged print". _______________

It's definitely my favourite camera in my entire kit. It performs admirably in all situations. I like the fact that it doesn't have nearly as many pixels CRAMMED into that sensor as the 50D. I also like the fact that you can get it super duper CHEAP!!! The higher res LCD screen really means nothing unless canon really bumps up the thumbnail preview resolution. I'm so over the moon with the 40D that I'm not even interested in the 50D. i agree. get the 40D and get a lens you want with the money you saved. wow you have many bodies. 1Ds Mark III AND D700. I envy your gear. What lenses do you have with the D700? Brian C - Alpha Auto Spa

Sure the 50D is the latest XXD, but most of the notable improvements thay have made I will be able to live without. For example the extra 5MP, I do try my hardest to get the image right in the view finder and never print larger than A4 so don't think I really need a 15MP at this stage. The extra resolution on the screen would be nice, but again hardly essential. Here in the UK (Unless someone can show me better) the cheapest I can find a 40D with 17-85 IS is £730 with a further £60 off from the rebate) where as the 50D with the same lens will cost me £1329, nearly double!! (want the kit lens as mine will be going with the 350D) I am not professional by any standard and as such any money spent will be dead money, as in I will never see it again and for me it's just a hobby. With this being the case my personal best route I feel is the 40D and some better glass, which I could get in addition to a grip etc and still have change. Just my thoughts...... digirev, simply electronics, kerso are doing the 50D body only for around £850. I got mine for £688 from simply electronics (special deal!). I've upgraded from the 400D such a big improvement,

Keep the XTi as backup. Canon 50D - 17-55mm F2.8 IS - 300mm F4L IS - 70-200mm F4L IS - 50mm F1.8 - 580EX II & 430EX - Full Gear Listing
