looks like you do not have any L lenses, upgrade your lens first

Doesn't answer the OP's question and there is nothing wrong with the lens list. Upgrading lenses may be an option after saving some money if the OP bought the 40D instead of the 50D. Not that much difference in the two cameras as others pointed out, but could save some money.

The Canon 17-55 for the Tamron 17-50. Not an L, but the best regular zoom for crop sensors.
Maybe the 70-200 IS (f/4 or f/2.8 ) for the 70-300 IS.

I haven't had any problems thus far with the results my lens are producing.

However the next lens I purchase will be something to attach to the XTi and never take off. I am thinking making my "cruise gear" setup be :

40D or 50D + Tamron 17-50 2.8
XTi + (probably sigma 50-150 2.8) Unless I find a better alternative that still keeps the size down and the weight off my shoulders and neck.

The only other lens I am thinking of getting is the Sigma 18-200OS just for a general walk around lens.

As far as the cameras go, I don't use burst mode (at least not knowingly do I use it) and even when shooting night club shots in near darkness with techno lights, I rarely go over ISO 400. Yes, despite that and using a non IS lens, I still can nail out some good shots. With only a 430EX I might add.

Looking over the options I could buy the 50D.

Or with (about) the same amount, I could get a used 40D, used 580II and perhaps enough left over for the Ray Flash ring light.

Although I have to admit that I really do not have a burning need for the 580II except for the rare use as a master (maybe 4 times a year) and the fact it is the only one that will fit the Ray Flash.

(yes, go ahead and kill me for wanting a ray flash even though most people have not been impressed.)

Sigh... this whole thing started out as a hobby and then turned into a little thing on the side with benefits. But it costs money I tell ya.

A camera.
Trinkets galore.

I am in the same boat and tilting towards Nikon D90 as i liked the feature of pop flash, which acts as a master for the external flash.

whereas for canon you need two external flashes for that, which means spending another 250 dollars and adding extra weight to the camera..

You really can't make a bad choice. Both bodies are very good. I like the 50D better for many reasons, but really like the new LCD, the microadjust for lenses and I think the camera is faster to focus. The 50D just seems faster to me than the 40D, but that's just an opinion. For most of what I shoot the noise level of the 50D seems about the same as the 40D. The higher resolution (higher pixel density) of the 50D requires good glass if you crop a lot. IMO on a per pixel basis the image from the 50D will seem "softer" with everything except really good glass. The overall fully framed image will look about the same for the 40D and 50D unless you print very large pictures (20X30 or so). Hope that made sense. IMO you really won't see much difference in the printed images, unless you crop a small portion of the image and then make an "enlarged print".

I think the 40D is an amazing, awesome camera. It's definitely my favourite camera in my entire kit. It performs admirably in all situations. I like the fact that it doesn't have nearly as many pixels CRAMMED into that sensor as the 50D. I also like the fact that you can get it super duper CHEAP!!!

The higher res LCD screen really means nothing unless canon really bumps up the thumbnail preview resolution.

I'm so over the moon with the 40D that I'm not even interested in the 50D.

i agree. get the 40D and get a lens you want with the money you saved. wow you have many bodies. 1Ds Mark III AND D700. I envy your gear. What lenses do you have with the D700?

I currently us a 350D and am thinking about upgrading in the next couple of weeks and was looking at either a 40D or 50D but find myself swinging towards a 40..

Sure the 50D is the latest XXD, but most of the notable improvements thay have made I will be able to live without. For example the extra 5MP, I do try my hardest to get the image right in the view finder and never print larger than A4 so don't think I really need a 15MP at this stage.

The extra resolution on the screen would be nice, but again hardly essential.

Here in the UK (Unless someone can show me better) the cheapest I can find a 40D with 17-85 IS is £730 with a further £60 off from the rebate) where as the 50D with the same lens will cost me £1329, nearly double!! (want the kit lens as mine will be going with the 350D)

I am not professional by any standard and as such any money spent will be dead money, as in I will never see it again and for me it's just a hobby. With this being the case my personal best route I feel is the 40D and some better glass, which I could get in addition to a grip etc and still have change.

Just my thoughts......

digirev, simply electronics, kerso are doing the 50D body only for around £850. I got mine for £688 from simply electronics (special deal!). I've upgraded from the 400D such a big improvement,

I'd go with a 50D upgrade, might as well get the AF micro adjustments and other incremental updates. Keep the XTi as backup.
