Decided to grab my tripod went I went home this weekend and the empire state building as a real nice color tonight so I figured I would take some night shots. I have not done very much night shooting so this is where my dilemma was. This shot was at f/11 in Aperture Priority mode stopped down -1EV to get rid of some of the blown out lights.

Let me know what you think of the picture and what other tips/tricks you have for night shooting that would improve this picture. Thanks!!

Well they would be much more south, completely out of the skyline pictured above. Yea it is sad to view the skyline without them.

Great shot! I was there with my Brother and his wife this past June. Never made it into the city at night though. We were staying on the Jersey side and it was to much of a hassle to get a ride to the ferry/train. Any shots of the Trinity Church area?

How long of an exposure did it end up using AV?

For night skyline shots, I'd recommend ditching AV and going to M. F/11 to 15 usually works, but give it a nice timed exposure, like 15 seconds... maybe a little more or a little less.

You can get some great reflections off the water that way.

Cool picture! One suggestion is to maybe take a shot a bit earlier when there is a bit of color left in the sky.

It chose 15 seconds in Av for f/11. Someone recommended fill flash, but I am not sure EXACTLY how that works at night and how it would help the shot.

I am going to try that tonight if I get home from work early enough.

Nice shot, looks a tad bit like it's leaning clockwise though. Maybe a half a degree or so.

Stig,

Unless the darker look is what you wanted, if your pic is 15 seconds, F11... then try switching to manual, dial in your F/11 and then go for a 20 second exposure, then try 25, 30, etc. See what you like. I find the longer exposures can really produce nicer colors and reflections etc. Even without light from the sky, it will pick up the glow from the buildings better... but of course, this is all up to your desired result.

Photos taken during sun up or sunset usually produce a great result. As suggested, getting shots while still some light left produces an awesome result.

This one was taken handheld, from the top of the Empire State... would have been alot better with a tripod, but the remaining light gives it a cool look IMO.
