I'm a software developer... it's not a problem, it's a feature.

I've had my 50D since October 1, and have had exactly two ERR99 situations.

The last happened last night when I was using a Sigma 30mm f/1.4. The first one also happened when that lens was on the camera. In both cases, the following steps, taken in the listed order, did NOT remove the ERR99 situation:

a) powering off and then on
b) powering off, removing batteries from grip, replacing after a minute and powering on
c) powering off, removing batteries from grip, removing lens, replacing batteries after a minute, replacing same lens, and powering on

The following did work in both situations:

a) powering off, removing batteries from grip, removing lens, replacing batteries after a minute, mount Canon 17-85mm IS lens, and powering on

After that you in both cases I removed the Canon 17-85 IS and put the Sigma 30mm back on, and continued shooting without any problems.

I have decided to do the firmware update because I believe that the ERR99 fault is not due to the lens being a Sigma 30mm. I have used this lens many times without a problem on the camera. I think the fact my two ERR99 situations occurred with that lens mounted is coincidental, and that the ERR99 did involve a "rare situation regarding the timing of pressing the shutter". Also, it is worth the risk of updating the firmware if it means so the problem is removed, and all my lenses work as intended.

Maxdave

After the firmware update, I will report if the problem ever resurfaces.

PS: Completed the update with no issues. It is quite large, so be patient, especially if you use a slower non UDMA card (didn't try that, I used a Lexar 300X, but I suspect it might take longer with a slower one).

i love how Canon always uses the "rare phenomenon" phrase :)

I get a bigger kick out of:

"Err 99" appears on the camera's display panel and LCD monitor

It's as if the camera just decided to display the message for no reason. But because of the timing of pressing the shutter, your hosed. :)

I haven't had an ERR99 yet so evidently my timing is good, but I'll be upgrading tonight.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

I just updated mine from 1.0.1. No issues from it except I had err99 once from using my Tokina12-24 F4 which incidentaly also gave me the same problem on my 30D. I rather do it anyway than be caught with those 'rare phenomenon' right in middle of a shoot in the middle of nowhere. I'd be really up shxt creek then:lol: Boy how I wish it also suddenly activate the GPS onboard that we never knew existed. There are FW that actually did that on some mobilephones.
Guess it won't be long before Canon include onboard GPS. Come on Canon,it's already on Nikon Coolpix, infact I'd rather have that than live view or even video.

Anybody without a card-reader able to get the firmware onto their card via USB?

My computer says it can't accept files of that extension in the root file.
