I fit most of my kit in a backpack, where it remains when not in use. The only time a lens is separated from the camera or pack is if I'm cleaning or selling it. For those using lens cases, in what situations do you require them?

If I'm not going to use one or the other for an extended time (say, over a week) I will put my 70-200 or 100-400 away in their OEM zippered bag just to keep out of harm's way...

My case is my backpack and/or suicide bomber vest.

I use lens cases to carry additional lenses on my Lowepro Toploader 75 AW. They attach on the sides via the sliplock system.

I'll sometimes use a toploader backpack with a small separate section on the bottom for my kit. There's only room for my 20D, 580EX and one lens. I'll throw another lens in the top section where my non-photo gear is, in which case I'll put it in a lens case. That's about the only time I use them, but when I do it's nice to have that peace of mind.

I have too much stuff for one bag (without using a truss :) ), so I swap the excess between the bags I use to carry stuff in (several of these but mostly the Slingshot 300) and the lens cases and a small hard case I used to use with my film system. Ie I put the kit together that I need.

I do sometimes use the lens cases via the sliplock system with one of the smaller bags to just get an extra lens in. Can also use them on a load belt but I don't often do that.

Eg, I used to strap the lens case for my 300/4 IS onto the side of a Slingshot 200 (before the 300 came along) because it was too big to go inside effectively.
