For those of you who have upgraded from the crop cameras, do you miss not having the pop-up flash on the 5D? I'm very happy with my 580 flash, but there are times I like having the pop-up, mostly for 'snapshots' rather than 'photographs'.

Interested in real user experiences.

As of yesterday night i now own two 5Ds :b and no i don't miss the flash cos i came from dual 1 series bodies so i haven't had an inbuilt flash on my cameras for about 4 years. When i had it i never used it either. I would rather stick a flasg on it and use it bounced or modified.

I do not miss the flash. But, I'm not much of a flash shooter, and do not own a flash unit. I used/use the pop-up flash on my 30D here and there for fill light. But, for low light shots I'd much rather use a fast prime, high ISO, and the ambient light. And that’s one of the big reasons I went for the 5D – the excellent high ISO performance.

Having never seriously used the flash of my XT, 20D or 40D I have no doubt that I would not miss the flash on the 5D or 1D series for that matter.

Unlike everyone else, I do at times miss the onboard flash. Especially for snap shots and times when I don't have my external handy. I like taking my camera everywhere and not like lugging around extra equipment. The onboard does produce a harsh light, but its better than nothing and I usually have a piece of frosted paper that I put over the flash to diffuse the light.

That's my concern. I would end up with a p+s for snapshots and social events just so I wouldn't have to schlep a ton of equipment. Granted, not a bad problem to have, but there's something about having that built-in - like a crutch - that makes you feel like you can travel a little lighter if need be. Certainly some strong opinions on this!

Thanks.

I like having the flash on the camera as it comes in handy every once in a while and that beats loosing a shot.

I agree. There has been a few times where I wouldn't have gotten the shot if it wasn't for the under appreciated built-in flash. However, as a new 5D owner I don't think I'll miss it all that much :D
