Or should I save my $ for future purchases? Selling my body & kit lens, I think the upgrade would cost me about $200.

The better ISO handling and 3200, not to mention fps, are reasons I think the 40D would help, I'm currently shooting an XTi with sigma 70-200 f/2.8 & Tamron 17-50f/2.8, I use it for kids, portraits, and football for the most part.

I just got my first flash last week - 580exII... should I learn how to use that for bettering my night football captures, or would the 40D's ISO handling make enough difference to take the leap?

That is what I figured, jberg. I was looking into getting a used 40D.

This is the same exact upgrade I made, and I've been more than happy with the decision. However, I kept the XTi instead of trading it in- it's nice to have an extra body "just in case".

"I just got my first flash last week - 580exII... should I learn how to use that for bettering my night football captures, or would the 40D's ISO handling make enough difference to take the leap?"

It depends on just how dark it gets. But even then, I've found that the flash (I'm using the 420) communicates more accurately with the 40D than the Rebel, resulting in sharper and fewer blown out shots.

Overall handling and performance, the 40D is a significant upgrade. Higher iso (plus several more iso options inbetween), faster af, better low-light handling, more than double fps- (3 vs 6.5), longer battery life, much sturdier body, and then there's the external controls, which are much easier and faster to navigate than internal menu functions, plus there's the option of shooting in sRAW (small RAW) in addition to traditional RAW (1/4 the image size or RAW provided you don't need that large of capture)... Yep, the 40D.

Having owned a 40D I think that is the way to go I loved mine and I don't think you will feel any regret in upgrading

I made that same upgrade 8 months ago and am I ever glad I did. You will feel the difference immediately - it's huge. Felt like it was going to run away with me compared to the XTi.

I upgraded from the Digital Rebel to a 40D several games ago. Huge difference in capabilities and quality of pics (i'm using the same Sigma lens - 70-200 2.8 ).

I also kept the Rebel and have my kit lens or wide angle that I use with it.

I personally went from a rebel(300d) to a 30D back when it came out and I see/saw and huge difference! Upgrade was a bit more costly for me but still a benefit!

A thousand times yes that it is worth it. I got the 30D in 2006 and Knew I wanted that instead of the Rebel. Yeah, I could have saved money getting the Rebel, but I knew I needed the 30D. It will be backup to my Mark II when I get it and when I have 2 Mark II's for my working and backup bodies, then maybe I'll retire it or keep it as a third body. The 40D wasn't out yet, but I still wasn't in a hurry to upgrade to the 40D because it only had a few more bells/whistles than the 30D. If I had a Rebel, yeah, I would have upgraded.

Thanks! I went for it this afternoon, should be here in a few days. I'm sure you all are right... anyone need an XTi now? ;)

Shooting last week, I felt like I was stretchign my ISO capabilities, it was the first time I needed more than my Xti could offer, so I figured it was time, and with the deal I found, a good time to upgrade.

If you can afford to, I'd keep the XTi if nothing else than to have a second body. Sometimes I'll use mine as a lightweight walk-around w/50mm lens.

I'm sure you'll like having iso 3200 as an option. The noise is quite tolerable, and easily neutralized by either shooting in RAW, noise software, or internal noise reduction.

I have been having similar conversations with a couple of friends who want to buy a camera. I have been trying to talk them into buying a used 30D instead of a Rebel. Great to see these comments reinforcing my thoughts. I upgraded from a Rebel to a Mark II.

Can anyone comment on the comparison in auto focus performance of a 30D to a Mark II?

There's no comparison. The Mark II just blows the AF of the 30D out of the water.
