just read this... so in terms of noise, 40d is superior clearly... not surprising.

other than noise, i like this camera on paper.

Makes the 40D look like a real bargain.

Can someone help me understand this? So, the high ISO noise and dynamic range are worst than the 40d. But, with all the extra resolution, when a picture is printed at the same size, would there be less "apparent" noise, due to the additional resolution? Don't get me wrong, I'm trying to talk myself into upgrading to the 50d, but the low light capability is something I have really been wanting improved. Maybe I just need to hold out and save up for the 5d...

There is no doubt that high ISO noise is a disappointment with the 50D - in all other apects I've found it better than my old 40D - certainly it is quicker to focus, the LCD screen and menu system much better.

You do have to question the Canon's & the market place appetite from ever increasing numbers of mega pixels - bit like the old Intel / AMD CPU race of a few years ago (pointless)

Probably the best buy you can do right now.

Im really glad i didn't upgrade straight away as i usually do this time. I have always thought that the sweetspot on APS-C is around 10-12mp.

I think they went too far with 15mp and i would have liked to see it with less resolution but with improved ISO and AF instead.

Wouldn't be hilarious if the 60D had 13 MP? I wish Canon would have left the sensor alone and put all the 50D features into a 45D. I for one wish the MP race would end already.

Canon is now the new industry leader in pixel density. And not much else.
I'd like to read Digital Picture's review soon.

Not an improvement over the 40d in terms of image quality...definitely not a worthy upgrade.

so worse noise performance and no better resolution when upressing a 40D file? Wow, spending the extra coin for NOTHING sure seems like a great deal. Oh, yeah, better screen and AF micro adjustments...

the next one won't up the MP... They can't at this point... the need to settle down and work on noise and DR with the pixels they have.

Seeing the 50D and D300 side by side sort of makes me wish I choose another route though in my pixel peeping I do not see the same softness as their noise pics show. Thats down right horrible and the Pentax smokes the 50D. I'm wondering if there is not something else going on there.

Ouch, the noise and dynamic range tests are scathing!

If you're talking about the K20D, that has a VERY nice Samsung CMOS sensor in it, and does very well at high ISOs. Pentax did do a great job on the image quality of the K20D (especially compared to the K10D). Now they just need to upgrade the autofocus system ;)

Guess I haven’t been paying attention to Pentax, but yikes!! They are smoking everyone until you get into the higher ISO.

Canon should have stopped at 12MP... The 450D's IQ is amazing considering its price.
