I've been shooting with my trusty 30D for a while now and I'm planning on upgrading to the new 50D. Was wondering how much of a real word performance difference I would notice from my old 30D to the 50D? Will I see a big difference in AF performance and more?

40D is a much better option for the money, and it has the same AF system as the 50D. I have a 40D and the af improvement over the 20D is huge, over the 30D is probably similar. check dpreview's review for overall performance.

No doubt about it, you'll get an improvement in performance. It's focusing system is better, high ISO performance is better, and has definitely has more megapixels than the 30D (although it can be argued that it doesn't make that much difference). However, the quality of your pictures still depends a great deal on the quality of the photographer, and unless you have money just burning a hole in your pocket, you may want to wait. Either way, good luck with your decision!

I'd wait if I were you. The just release review from dpreview.com gave it a less than stellar review and in some cases its worst than than 40D such as in noise performance and dynamic range. Looks like Canon wanted to be the leader the megapixie race. They won, but the performance is not that great at least from this review. I'd check out other review before buying. There's some great bargains for used 40Ds.

I just went to the 50d from the 40D and have no regrets.
The AF system is the same as the 40D but behaves better. Although the same mechanically or technically I believe they have refined it. The Digi 4 processor has to be a big help as she is much faster.
Be prepared for RAW files to be as large as 22,891 KB.

Here is some fun I had with the 50D and 70-200 2.8 IS shooting some Frizbee Dog Competitions (external link). 26 pics 9 through 12 get the most comments.

.

Be sure to note that the Digic processor has absolutely nothing to do with AF though. AF is managed by a separate processor.
