Hello everyone.

I've been wanting a digital SLR for quite some time now. I was going to purchase a 300D and was actually going to post in this forum a while ago if I should wait to see if an "updated and newer" version would be out......and coincidentally I see a thread mentioning the 350D :D!

I've been shooting film with an oldie Minolta Maxxum 7000 and want a digital pretty badly.

My friend has a 300D with a 420ex external flash and I really like it. He also has access to another 420ex. I know the 550ex has the ability to set these off too but is rather costly heh.

My question is....Does the Sigma EF-500 DG Super E-TTL II compare at all to the 550ex? Does it even have the ability to set off 420ex's?

I'm looking for a good flash to compliment my future 350D.

All help is greatly appreciated.

P.S. This forum has been a good read so far. I've been here soaking up some info for a good few hours.

Someone that has one of those will jump in pretty soon to tell you for sure, but I think the 500 will act as a master just like the 550 does. I have the 580, which is the newest one out, so it cost a bit more, but it's sweet.

I don't have any experience with the Sigma flashes, but check out this post. I think you will find the information useful:

Thanks for the replies. I took a look at that thread but I need a definate answer if the Sigma can set off slave 420ex's. Thread was a bit unclear or I must be too tired and hungry. Heh.

Anyone here have any experience with this combo?

It seems if it can indeed do this then it won't be too bad of a buy over the more expensive 550ex.

I have the Sigma EF 500 DG Super and it's supposed to be able to slave the 420EX but unfortunately, I can't tell you that it does that because mine isn't working right in wireless mode. Maybe my unit is defective. I've been in touch with Sigma tech support in Japan and they're looking into the problem. Seems like I'm the only one who's reported a problem with it, though.
