So i have the FF 5D with the 24-105 lens, which is all great and dandy, but lately i've wanted something faster and maybe even a bit longer.

Are there any lenses out there 105+ that just performs awesome for it's price?
I dont think i will go for a expensive L lens right now, as i dont have the money.

I had a 70-200 f4.0 non-is earlier with my 400D but got sold when i baught my 5D, i loved it, but i diddnt like that it was so slow.

Sooo.. Maybe something like the 70-200 2.8 or 100-400 IS just cheaper?
Maybe im asking the impossible o.O

have you considered the sigma 70-200 equivalent? its just as fast as the Canon version, and just as good IMHO.

You can also look at the Tamron 70-200. It got a pretty good review in Shutterbug magazine.

1 would get the 70-200 f/4 is and have matching glass from 24-200 wit regards to everything being f/4

or better yet

if you are not shooting in dimly lit churches or venues for stuff like wedding photography...i would buy the 70-200 f/2.8 non is in a heartbeat.

That would be a correct assumption.

+1 for the 200 2.8. It will be nicely longer than the 105 end of your 24-105 and does indeed produce very nice pics.

Yes if you want something compact and light but a bit longer then the 200/2.8 is an excellent lens with very good IQ, also works well with the 1.4X and 2X.

If i get the 200 2.8 and get the 1.4x or 2x converter, will i loose AF or Sharpness?
Anyone has any sample pics with either converter used?

Would be nice to boost it to 400mm when needed :) But scared of softness etc..

You won't loose AF, as even with teh 2X extender it still is a 400 F/5.6, but you will loose sharpness.

However, stop down 1 stop with the 1.4X, and 2 stops with the 2X, and you'll be fine.

Kind regards, Wim

.

In general, yes.

For you, if the 70-200 4 was too slow, no.

Sharpness will be reduced on any lens with a TC, but the 200/2.8 is so sharp it does not really notice the 1.4X, the 2X is still good on a crop camera, not sure how the edges hold up on FF but they are probably OK.

AF slows down, not too bad with the 1.4X but is very slow with the 2X. Of course you loose 1 and 2 stops of light respectively.

This is a 100% crop with the 200/2.8L II and an EF 2X II wide open at f5.6
