I see all of these posts about Pocket Wizards, and posts about the bargain basement radio units made in China, and I wonder if there are many Quantum Radio Slave users (QRS2 or QRS4) still out there?

I have QRS2 units myself, and never really found the need even for 4 channels, much less 16 channels. QRS are less expensive than PW, more reliable than the Chinese remotes, more flexible than the Cybersyncs. Why does no one out there ever mention them? (The QRS4 is still manufactured.) The Quantum name is still known for battery packs for speedlights, buy why not radio slaves? You can even fire cameras with them!

Yeah, I love the Quantum....They were popular with students back when I was coming up. I had an older version and sold it awhile ago on ebay. The quantum was a really nice sync for me....and just like you...I never needed all of the channels.

Wilt, it's interesting how the strobist has changed photography culture. There are certain kinds of gear that seem to be trendy now...and other gear that is completely ignored....all of it seems to go back to what's popular on the strobist blog :p

Good observation about Strobist... I keep reading 'read the Strobist' as if he is next to G*d Almighty, and his word is Gospel. So that must have a lot to do with PW in the public mind.

If you do a search for QRS4 the first photography link that comes up is this thread. The first hit to come up has to do with health threats in Mali...

Quantum has certainly been around a long time but most of today's photographers have not. And if you can't find it on Google it doesn't exist....

And have you checked the prices lately?

Well, as is true of any web search, you have to use the correct term! :) I only used the term 'QRS4' for brevity (lazy typing!)

I just Googled 'Quantum Radio Slave' and got 3640 hits, a brand new price of $354 in NYC for a 4i full set (receiver and transmitter) vs. one PW transceiver for $295 (and you need two), so half the price.

As with any comparison one does, you have to make sure you are comparing apples to apples and oranges to oranges. The $295 PW price you were looking at is for the PW MultiMax which has a lot more features than the PW Plus II or the Quantum RS41. The PW Plus II which is more comparable to the RS41 is $188 each so a pair of those is only a couple of dollars more than the RS 4i combo. :)
