Trying to get a feel for what people with this lens use as settings for shooting indoor sports in low light conditions.

Unless your going for a special wide angle shot the lens will be limiting in focal length. Also the key with a "sports" lens is focus speed in most cases which would be my question about that lens.

My first lens for this task was the "nifty fifty" 50mm f/1.8. It's a great lens for the price, but it's obvious shortcoming is that it's a bit on the long side for many indoor situations when coupled with a camera with a 1.6x crop factor, which I have. Next was my Tamron 28-75, which I stated eslewhere has subpar sharpness wide open. My next stop was the 35mm f/2. This is a bright and adequate general purpose lens, which I stuck with for over a year for most of my shooting needs. Finally, I've invested in the Tamron 17-50, and I must confess it's my favorite lens in this range yet. Fairly bright and sharp at all f-stops, it outclasses all of the aforementioned lenses in my line-up.

I would have been in trouble without it last year down on the field when my football team won the state championship Mike R

I have the 17-40L, but would love to have f2.8 rather than f4. And I don't want to pop for another L for something I would use only occasionally. May be worth a try.
