About to print cards to Shutterfly, worried...

I'm about to order about $200 worth of stuff from Shutterfly and I'm kind of worried because my last order with them came out with a reddish tint.

  1. Running Vista Ultimate x64
  2. Monitor was calibrated with Spyder3Elite.
  3. Photos were taken in RAW+JPEG with XSi in sRGB.
  4. RAW was converted with ACR (16-bit, sRGB) and edited in PhotoShop CS3 (nothing major, small color correction, a little denoising, some spot healing, and added a pearl to a necklace because the necklace was crooked and the clasp was showing)
  5. Converted to 8-bit & flattened image, saved as JPG with quality 12.
The problem I had last time is that the printed images looked as they did on my monitor when NOT in color-managed applications (such as Paint.Net) rather than when in color-managed apps (such as PhotoShop CS3 & Windows Vista Photo Gallery).

I was under the impression that if my system was properly setup, that there should only be a tiny difference, if any, between a color-managed app and a non-color-managed app, but that seems to not be the case for me. It's also going to make it very difficult to share images with family and friends as they're all apparently going to look red when viewed in IE...

I've attached a small version of the image to this post. In PS we (my wife and I) have nice skin tones. When viewed in a non-color-managed app we both look pink (like salmon) and that pink result is very similar to the results I got printing to Shutterfly last time. I definitely turned off their "color adjustment" thing last time and the same shot came out perfect when printed to CostCo and Target.

Can anyone give me some advice on this issue (or printing to Shutterfly in general)? Is there anyone else that prints photo announcement cards?

Lovely photo!

Reading your description, it screams to me that Shutterfly are disregarding embedded ICC profiles. Bad news!

Do they give you any specs/advice regarding ICC profiles?

I like Mpix.

On a side note the pic looks fine (skin tones look normal, not pink) on my non-officially calibrated laptop (I do have a slight adjustment done via Monitor Calibration Wizard which seems to make my screen match the printing, at least close enough for me).

This is what they say about ICC profiles.

As I read that, they claim that if you send them an sRGB file and have viewed that file on an sRGB monitor, that you should get exactly what you see on your screen. That said, on my last experience with them that didn't happen.

If they don't have an ICC profile for their printer that you can download and use to soft-proof your shots you will have some difficulty without having them do a proof print for you.

Also, there is a disparity, not just between viewing on an non-color-managed browser, but also an uncalibrated monitor. I just shuffled your shot between a calibrated monitor and an uncalibrated monitor and saw shifting, but you really don't notice it unless you view the two side-by-side.

It's always a good idea for a lab to do a proof print for you, or to get a single print from a place that's given you good results (you mentioned Costco and Target) and send it to them and insist they duplicate the color tone. For critical/expensive jobs, I'd consider this a must, especially since you had this problem with them in the past.

All that being said, there are shifts between viewing in your PS color-managed setup, viewing in a non-color-managed app, and viewing on a non-color-managed monitor, and, since you can't color-manage the lab printer, there will be differences there as well. You manage your image as much as you can, but you will have to deal with the discrepancies.
