I went to this spot to take a few landscape shots, but the scenery wasn't quite what I was hoping for. Decided to do a few portraits instead.

The camera was in manual mode metered on the orange in the sky. I had a bare 580EX on the camera set at -1 in ETTL mode for fill. I had the head of the flash angled up slightly which is why the light falls off towards the bottom of the frame. I preferred this to actually lighting the rocks she was sitting on.

its a nice picture but i just think its a little bit too dark for my liking. maybe try to brighten it up a little bit?

It looks fine to me. It's an early evening shot and looks like it. But either way in 30 years it'll still be great.

Nice capture. The flash fall-off matches the background, not a problem to me. I do agree with Kissa, would try brighten her face just a bit in curves,

nice shot and thanks for sharing the setup/settings. very helpful to those of use trying to learn flash.
