When I had a camera with a 22mm sensor, I was very happy with the 28/1.8 and 85/1.8.

My 85/30 combo rocks!

If you want to shoot bugs, the Canon 100mm 2.8 macro, Sigma 105mm, or similar would be your best bet.

For stunning macros, you want a lens with a minimum focal distance that equals 1:1 (the object's size equals the size on the sensor).

As for primes, I have the 28, 50, and 100 on my crop.

Curious, out of all the primes I've seen mentioned here, why has no one mentioned the 400 2.8? That would have to be my all time favorite "want" and do not "have".

Probably because it's expensive, and heavy, weighing about 12 lbs.

I'd take the 300mm F/2.8 IS anyday, as it is handholdable, quick as greased lightening to focus, has amazing bokeh, and sharp as the razors edge.

But the wallet and bank account says, not just yet bucko. So I can see the 300mm F/4.0 IS and the 400mm F/5.6 finding their way into my prime time arsenal.

Your camera is alot smarter than the "M" Zealots would have you believe

I kept looking at my watch to make sure the date wasn't the 1st of April..

Sorry Derek, just a few jokes. ;) I do have to say though - this is worse than LR's screw-up, but slightly better than PuppyDogMom's. But I guess that doesn't say much.

This is blasphemy..... were is the stake someone get fire.

My primes list is getting longish... I've got 9 of em all said and done.
Highlights include Canon EF50mm f/1.4 USM, Helios-40-2 85mm f/1.5, CZJ Biotar T 2/58, Canon EF100mm f/2.8 Macro USM, MC Peleng 8mm f/3.5.

What I would say EVERY SHOOTER should have...
1) 50mm f/1.4 (regardless of if shooting crop or FF, this focal length is a must if you ask me) - on crop this lens offers a FOV similar to 85mm on FF, which "reclassifies" this lens as a classic portrait lens instead of a "normal"
2) 85mm f/1.8 (or faster) - on crop this offers a FOV similar to 135mm on FF, which makes it a short telephoto, but still highly useful.
3) 28mm f/1.8 or 30mm f/1.4 - on crop this replaces the 50mm as the normal FOV lens.

Optionals
4) 100mm Macro (or 105mm Macro) -or- 50mm Macro -or- 60mm Macro... Macro lenses open a whole new realm of creative opportunities to the photographer. I believe every shooter could benefit from one.

5) 8mm Circular FishEye -or- 10mm Rectangular/FullFrame Fisheye... FishEyes are fun and give you a wildly different perspective than any other lens.
