In terms of sports composition a shot where no player eyes can be seen is a problem. The moment is well captured but I think you were on the wrong side of the field #2 should be looking straight at the camera from the other side.

Luigi

i dont think seeing a players eyes makes or breaks a picture. it might add some
extra character give a picture that extra edge, but iv seen plenty of professional,
captivating sports photos that dont show the eyes.

great capture. like the colored more than B&W . b&w are too plain looking.
NJdez did a good job of editing it. The original is a bit too dark

Hey guys tear this one apart! Feel free to do some editing... all the exif should be intact... How can I make this better?

I have to say that normally I don't really give a hoo-ha about sports shots (or sports in general), but I did think the timing on this shot was just great so I took at stab at it.

To me, this shot just screamed portrait. Having the ref in the shot was really irrelevant. I did do a quick clone once I cropped the ref out as his foot was still in the image...looking at it now, I got a little sloppy there. Either way with this crop, I feel it puts the emphasis on the "action" as it were and the central subjects body creates a very nice diagonal in the image. In addition, I also adjusted the levels (there was no info on the right side of the levels box at all) and I bumped up the contrast a bit. I also used Saturation to take out the nasty blue and cyan casts that were evident in the white uniforms and the background. Everything took me about 3 minutes. If this were my image (should you decide to reprocess this yourself), I also might separate the foreground players into their own separate layer and blur the background just a little more...a little "fake DOF" if you will and then I'd sharpen the foreground just a bit. Maybe straighten that line on the window at the top too...I missed that.

All and all nice capture and again great timing...well done.

Anyways, hope you like!
Peace,
Jim

Our football season just ended. (7th and 8th graders) and I was taking photos of all of my sons games both from the stands and on the field. It was my first time taking football pictures and it was very difficult. I took around 1200 images and only about 200 stand out as good/great shots. Like most have already said the action is amazing but with a little PP you can make the image stand out. I was shooting our games with an XTi and a 70-200 F4L. I am investing in the 2.8 for next year and a 40D for the higher ISO.

All in all I would suggest to just fire away the entire game and walk the entire field on both sides. This way you will find what works best for you. Good luck and post some more when you have them.

I personally think the only way you can make this picture look better is...if you print it and put it on the wall! Great capture!!
