The festive mood in the City of Smiles became contagious as masked dancers lined the streets dancing along with the music all the way to the Bacolod public plaza last October 17-19th. Every year, the three-day streetdancing competition is one of the highlights of the Masskara festival in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental, Philippines. This year, the colorful and flamboyant costumes of the dancers have an environmental twist. They are made of recycled and indigenous material .And as an electric streetdancing competition was held for the first time, luminous costumes wowed the crowd at Lacson Street. For 29 years, Negrenses have celebrated the Masskara festival to remind them of their triumph over the difficulties of the sugar industry in the early 1980s.
