Lightroom raw+jpeg question

I normally take raw+jpeg shots. When I download them to lightroom it displays them as one thumbnail, raw+jpeg (unless you change the option in preferences dialog to display them as two separate thumbnails.)

I enjoy using the preference that displays the raw+jpeg as one thumnail. However, I'm confused at which one I'm actually working on (raw or jpeg), and how do I separate them if I want to. As I understand it, they are not stacked. Can anyone explain how this works! Thanks!

With RAW+jpg files, you are only ever editing the RAW data... the +.jpg is only really done as 'courtesy' to let you know that a .jpg version exists.

As far as I know, there isn't an easy way to seperate them. I'm not even sure if changing that option, then re-importing the .jpgs would work.

Cant you select the info as an option somewhere and it lists the files info on the bottom? Like CR2 file or a JPEG?
