Just ordered a brand new 40D, IN AUSTRALIA, for $1079, which ends up about $700 US. Amazing.

Instead of loving things and using people, why not use things and love people? :-)

Mark.
Go for the 40D and the L glass.
You will always have the great glass.
I bought the 40D this summer and love it.

You can get the 40D kit from amazon free shipping no tax for most for about $1100, sell the lens for about $300 and end up only paying around $800 for a brand new 40D. At this point I to would chose that over the 50D and the 50D's price is still way high just because its new.

CamaroSS,
What a good post. I am in the throws of deciding between the 2 cameras. Your post has added some great points to my thinking in making this decision.

(MY FIRST POST ON THIS FORUM)

Thank you very much.

You may find the 24mm (effectively 38.4mm) to be too long for your common use.

I agree that 24mm is too long on a crop for most things. With the 40D, you can always crop if its too wide, but if your lens isn't wide enough, you can only back up so far before falling off the side of a cliff

CRUD! can't believe the price is that low now--- I have a 40D with little use-- been thinking about selling it but not sure I will sell and take a bath on it.

Agreed. Get something around 17mm-18mm. If you do any landscape or nature work, I think you'll be disappointed with 24mm.

Sorry but
I keep reading all these people buying 40Ds at 650$ new but where?
I see them from reputable retailers at around 900 but all the findings at 500$ are from bogus retailers that have bad or cero ratings
Does anyone want to share the wisdom?

Thanks

thats what i was finding as well, i just watched the known guys prices for a week or 2 and when got lower i bit.

as for the lens, i was torn to go the 17-40 and 70-200 route, or the 24-105 and fill in the gaps later. not yet in stone for the lenses tho.

i'll be getting the 40D when i can sometime after Xmas, assuming there isn't a price drop before xmas. I bought the 70-200 F2.8 L IS and am using that on my beat Rebel XT, racking up the actuations on the XT getting used to the new lens (i shoot motocross mainly) so i don't rack up the actuations to badly on the 40D when i get it. Then i get the 40D, and all hell can break lose.
You think 24mm is too narrow? try refusing to use the 18-55mm kit lens because it's sub par now (IQ) compared to the 'L' Lens, and try to stand back far enough to get the 70mm to work hahaha.
After i build up some more money after i get the 40D, i'll be getting a 10-22mm for sure, and was looking at the 24-70L also (just wish it had IS). But that's alot of paycheques to cash before then :S. And got to get a 580ex sometime soon to.

Have owned a 20D, a 30D and a 40D. Gave my 20D to my son-in-law.
He almost cried. Replaced it with the 30D, which was still more camera than I understood how to use. It was stolen. Replaced it with the 40D.
Which is still more camera than I know how to use. Started taking photos
daily. Am seriously beginning to capture what I see. I am stunned by the
quality of photograph this camera can take when technique is proper.
I think shifting to Raw has also been a great boost in showing the 40D's
potential. I say a great buy!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And I'm looking forward to the
new 5D.

Hello everyone. I'm considering a 40D purchase very soon. I'm curious to know where people have found it for under $700 new. Sounds too good to be true!
