24 not wide enough ? I keep hearing that... no one lens is going to do everything. I often use a 28-75 and it's almost never used below 50, ... if I'm thinking wide, I use a 10-22. If I'm thinking longer, a 70-200....

I can't imagine finding much use for a 17-5x.

Bottom line, depending on your realistic plan for a lens lineup, and your shooting interest, all lenses can be and are "good" as well as useless.

If the 24-105 was a 2.8, I would buy it in a heartbeat.

I just got a BRAND NEW Canon 40d for $638!

Ugh, sounds like a scam.

Do you actually have it already?

i'll be getting the 40D when i can sometime after Xmas, assuming there isn't a price drop before xmas. I bought the 70-200 F2.8 L IS and am using that on my beat Rebel XT, racking up the actuations on the XT getting used to the new lens (i shoot motocross mainly) so i don't rack up the actuations to badly on the 40D when i get it. Then i get the 40D, and all hell can break lose.
You think 24mm is too narrow? try refusing to use the 18-55mm kit lens because it's sub par now (IQ) compared to the 'L' Lens, and try to stand back far enough to get the 70mm to work hahaha.
After i build up some more money after i get the 40D, i'll be getting a 10-22mm for sure, and was looking at the 24-70L also (just wish it had IS). But that's alot of paycheques to cash before then :S. And got to get a 580ex sometime soon to.

You know, I always hear people on this board bash the hell out of the 18-55 kit lens. Well I really don't care what other people think about the lens. It has worked extremely well for me. I have more than five cover shots using a lens that costs about $100 then I was so happy with it, I "upgraded" to the new IS version. My biggest concern with the lens has been the manual focus ring. IQ, on the other hand, has been excellent.

I'm a photographer that shoots with extremes. I use a short lens and a long lens to do everything. I want to say I have used my 28-135 about two or three times. It never leaves the bag because I have no use for it. So where is my motivation to buy a 24-105 with my 1.6 sensor? I hardly feel 28mm is wide enough for my style of shooting. The 18-200 lens is a breath of fresh air, I just wish it was USM or could focus at a closer distance than 1.5 feet! lol

Hello everyone. I'm considering a 40D purchase very soon. I'm curious to know where people have found it for under $700 new. Sounds too good to be true!

You can get it for $600 new using the live.com cashback thing with eBay. Search in the Marketplace section for how to use this deal. You will end up paying $800 now and getting $200 back in 60 days.

Get the 40D the price is so good right now...40D has better dynamic range than 50D too from dpreview. Noise controls are the same even at ISO3200 (bad noise control anyway), though you have options to shoot at high in 50D. AF are the same. 50D price is rather high for its other upgrades. Besides, you can take "more" shots with 40D with a single battery too. With the price of 50D, you can get a 40D and possibly a L lens too.

I've never used the 50D, but I have the 40D and I love it. As stated before, it's way more camera than most people will ever need.

As far as 24mm not being wide enough for the 40D, I have to agree based on my experience with the 28-135. That's why I have a 17-35mm 2.8L, for a "wide to normal" lens. I find that it's mounted on my 40D most of the time.

If all you can swing is the 18-55mm, then get it by all means. I've seen some really nice shots taken with that lens. It's not the greatest, but it's far from junk.

It's not too good to be true. You actually pay $800 for the 40d but if you use live.com (microsoft search engine) you will get 25% cashback, getting it down to $600 or less. You have to wait 60 days to get your cash back (kinda like a rebate program). It really works!!

just picked up my 40D today.
I was going to buy it anyways, and my wife became irate when i told her, telling me we had no money, little did i know she was going to buy it for me (with the help from both our families) for Xmas.
So i effectively have ruined her xmas present 3 years in a row :) In a good way though :).

It was on for $899 Canadian last night, went up to $950 overnight. But i wanted one, as i was told once they're gone from the shelves they're gone for good for up here anyways.

I looked at getting it from B&H like i did my 70-200 F2.8 L IS, i had got it there when our dollar was so high and it saved me about $500 getting it stateside,
but now our dollar is so low again, it was cheaper to buy from Henry's for once then it was to buy from B&H.

In order for me to act suprised Xmas day in front of her family i had to give it to her to wrap up tonight so i wouldn't use it before Xmas :(. So tempting to open it up and take it for a trial run :S. I did swipe the manual out of it so i can be all read up on it come Xmas day.

Take the 40D out of the box and put your xxD in its place.

No one will know the differance... hehe

This is funny stuff. I've purchased (4) 40D's sealed in the box as certified Canon refurbs recently for $517 each. All bought from the same place at different times over the last month. Sealed from Canon, always 100% condition, 3 month Canon warranty...

I bought my first one and someone randomly asked if I wanted to sell it. Offered me $750. Why not? So I bought another one and got thinking about it and tossed it on CraigsList for $750 and sold it in a day. Did it again after that. Now I just got my 4th today. Someone just e-mailed me asking if I had one to sell. Good deal for everyone.

It all started when I sold my 20D for $50 more than I paid for it a year prior. :D

Just completed about 3 months with my 40D and it's like driving a 3 series BMW.....handles well, perfectly balanced, just the right size and does almost anything you ask it. I do a lot of macro work and the lower resolution lcd works fine for me. Is the 50D worth the extra $$$? I spent a few days with a friends 50D and the improved lcd did make a bit of difference during live view. I use live view to set up a lot of macro work and it was more accurate than the 40d's lcd. For sporting events both cameras had good enough fps and IQ. At higher ISO's the 50D was slightly better but at 8x10 size the differences were negligible. So, I'm happy with my 40D and probably would not have spent the extra $$$ on the body but saved it for better/more glass.

The 40D just keeps on getting cheaper. I´m getting the 40D with the 17-85 lens i know it's not the best lens but buying the combo the camera comes down to around U$S750 bucks.
