Can I get some tips and input about taking photographs at night at stars and or metor showers. Like what settings to use on the camera, whether or not a flash is worth while, aperature all of that stuff. I don't just want to go out and fill my CF card with black crap.
Thanks In advance

Don't know a whole lot about this, but I can assure you that using a flash is not usefull :)
Suggest you search the web for this. Starting point might be the following link:

Now that the shower is over and I have done with my long exposure experiment with my D30 all through the night on the hills of Livermore; I have come to conclusion, D30 or D60 is not designed for time exposure.

I have tried 5 minutes exposure at f4 and 100 ISO. The resultant picture was as noisy as my 400$ consumer grade digital camera. Moreover the camera took more than a minute to execute its internal de-noising algorithm.

For time exposure more than few seconds, the only option is to use conventional negative or transparency film.
