\Began Rant\

Common' you guys and gals. Every time I check out the sports forum there is always an array of post that have had 100+ views with out a single comment, even when the poster askes for C/C. Compare that then with we have this little crowd that only post within each others post, ignoring the new people, kind of the cool photographers corner. Many of you all were the new people not so long ago yourselves. The real cool crowd are those that help the new people learn. If all you want is your buddies to pat you on the back and say what a great photographer you are, then go get a paying gig. Nothing says I love ya more than a pay check. But a lot of us, me included, have learned a lot here, and it is time for some to keep the newbies going. Quit being so tight with your comments. And be constructive, don't just show off your ego.

\End Rant\

Couldn't agree more! More constructive criticism would be the best thing that could happen to the sports section - especially in the form of "I don't like [Insert criticism] about your photo, and to improve that I would do this: [Insert suggestion]"

I haven't posted photos in a while because I've been busy with school, but I remember getting a lot of "there are good" or "this is pretty good for your first time doing x". Those sort of comments are nice to hear, but they don't really help the shooter improve.

Bring on the criticism! And equal criticism for all!:)

Your thread has blown highlights. Could be my monitor though.

If you want comments, I suggest posting in Critique Corner. It's my experience that posting in specialized areas does not precipitate a wealth of comments. I've seen one or two cases where the poster got offended when somebody offered suggestions for improvement, because he wasn't looking for criticism. You might get an occasional "I like it," but that's about it. The major exception is the nude/glamour section which gets a lot of "She's hot!", which are not particularly photographically relevant.

You're english teacher would not be proud right now Mark.

I do agree though, and know some have said they just give up on posting because people ask for C&C and then complain when you don't tell them how great it is. They get offended easily, which makes no sense when you say you're trying to learn. That's why you get so many short responses like "great shot" and everything it seems. Not to mention there is a very small percentage of members who actually make a living with there camera in the sports section.

Even though I am a yankee, I spent my first years in school bouncing between French and British schools. Messed me totally up. Not an excuse, just a reason. But agreed. I am a terrible proof reader. Sometimes go back and look at my stuff and wonder how the heck did I post that. What's worse is when someone has already replied, making fixing the problems impossible. My bad - I will admit to it.

Every time I check out the sports forum there is always an array of post that have had 100+ views with out a single comment

I've had threads go to page 2 that way, so it's not just Sports.

A few years ago I posted this: Long-time members WARNING!!! COPYRIGHT!!!

we have this little crowd that only post within each others post,

I try to give the new people a bump, even if it's only "Nice shot", but generally I know who's commented on my threads & tend to comment more in theirs. What goes around, comes around... ;)

On behalf of dyslexics everywhere, we forgive you, ha. People wonder why I proof read and spell check 20x over, that's the reason. My professor urged me to be a writer not realizing how much I struggled with it. She kept telling me how powerful my words are, yea of course, I checked them over so much I wouldn't sleep at night! Unlike this post which I'll write on the fly and not proof read :)

BTW, I can't count how many times I've done that!! Had a post and woke up saying to myself "I hope noone quoted me" - alas, to find it quoted and unfixable. Kind of like this one, ha.

Oh, and Mark, good post.

If it wasn't a 12 hour drive I'd come tip one with ya, maybe next year. Chicago is the only city I seem to visit yearly no matter what. Of course I'm off till March 1st except for random acts of boredness I choose to squish with any work, so right now am up for any "vacation".

ok hows this... go out push the button, examine your shots and fix the problem.

after a few million shots you will have it down just like us!

If you expect to get past the curve strickly by reading these pages you are mistaken.

Thats like saying you have to go 17500 mph to orbit the earth....
why ???? I dunno you just do cause I read it somewhere.

If you even remember that much when you need the info.

If you dont know what to change while you shoot and why then you can never fix it on the fly and progress.

Until you work through it you will never get it...

unless you plan on logging in everytime you need advice!

Even then this forum will not teach you to pan for a subject or recognize a great shot....

Go push the button and learn! :o

I agree with this but at the same time i'm guilty of not posting for other people. Every once and a while I'll have a few comments on my pictures while other times no one will say a word.

I'll do my part in commenting more.
