I second that. 430 is a good use of that money, leaves you with a little extra to put towards filters, bags, beer, any array of things really.

Photographers are a strange bunch. What other group of people would go up to a bunch of strangers and say, "Here, spend my money for me"?

If you don't have any photographic need you have noticed because you couldn't get a specific shot that you could get with specific equipment, don't buy anything.

Save your money until you know what you NEED.

A telephoto? 70-200 f/4 or a 55-250 IS depending how much you want to spend / what your needs are.

I say flash and then save up for a quality lens.

That said, that tamron 17-280 with VR is looking pretty good for a beginner...

Yup, if you're going to get a flash, go for the 580 II EX.
