Now this isn't really related to photography. But I'm trying to sell a watch on craigslist and I get the follow e-mail back

Sounds great,
> i am very happy for your quick respond to my mail.I
> still
> interest to purchase this item from you to present my friend as surprise
> package
> gift and i will like to proceed with your payment due to fast approach of
> the
> wedding. My form of payment would be via paypal you can log to
> www.paypal.com (external link) to
> setup account with them as member and email me your payment name and
> email
> address to send your money.Additional $100 will be add to your asking
> price to
> cover the shipment cost via EMS express mail service post office.please
> if my
> mode of payment is acceptable kindly proceed to delete the advert on
> craigslist
> web and email me your info to further with your payment.
>
> Thanks

After I ask where I would be shipping it he sends me this

>i will contact paypal with the information once i received it from my friend
> proceed to email me your paypal ID

This sounds a little weird to me, I know all about the other craigslist scams like fake cheques, cashier checks, money orders, escrow. But I haven't heard about any paypal scams. Any one have any input or seen anything like this? My impression was that paypal was farily secure.

Cheers,
Josh

They could do a reverse transaction but it's strange.

If I sell something on CL, it's all face-to-face transaction.

basically you'll be shipping the item to an unknown address not associated with whatever the other paypal account is. obviously you won't be covered.

I thinks Craigslist is the best for only local dealing. We are face to face and cash is involved. Not paypal or credit card. They have a lot of scams.

I got the exact same thing on Kijiji.ca when I was selling some equipment.
Damn scammers.

This exact e-mail is the reason that Craigslist always puts the following on every e-mail you receive inquiring about things you're selling:

** CRAIGSLIST ADVISORY --- AVOID SCAMS BY DEALING LOCALLY
** Avoid: wiring money, cross-border deals, work-at-home
** Beware: cashier checks, money orders, escrow, shipping
** More Info: http://www.craigslist.org/about/scams.html (external link)

They didn't mention PayPal, but the shipping part should immediately tip you off. It's a Nigerian scam and you will lose if you try to do anything with the gracious gift-giver. :)

Yeah figured it was too good to be true. I just wonder how they fake send money through paypal? From the sounds of the e-mail he was going to send funds and make me send to a third party address for shipping.

Cheers,
Josh

After a couple of encounters with scammers on Craigslist, I ONLY do local and person to person.

you can do it that way, IF ONLY the item is shipped to paypal confirmed address. :) 100% legit since no one can steal an account and change the address ;)

Nice....my favourite is the person who wants to purchase items for his "son whos at university in Nigeria", and wants to use paypal....but wants you to ship the item to Nigeria for him.....lol. So far this scammer has tried to buy everything I have put on Kijiji from a cell phone to camera, to a car. Yep, I got the email to ship a car to Nigeria...lol. Stupidity.
