I know I know...my two gripes are that I should have made the image bigger and that I should have cropped more of the sky out level with my head.

But...I didn't use a tripod (It got broken over the weekend) :( So I was limited as to my locations to shoot. #2 it started raining after the 2nd shot. So not a good day for me to go shoot pictures.

Anyway here's the pic:

Over all I don't think this is a bad shot at all...I love the colors and the "feel" (although you could have smiled a little more there! LOL!). Personally I'd crop this one down to a 4x6 format (landscape as you have here) taking a good portion off the top (take it down to just above your head) and a bit off the bottom and maybe clone out those highlights from the sky. One other small little nit...your glasses. If you look at the lens of the glass on the left side of your face (image right)you can see a bit of a distortion...I'd use the clone tool and clean that up too.

Just my $.02 worth,
Jim

1. Smile. You have a blank stare that isn't doing you any favors.
2. Iron your shirt collar. It's a portrait, and isn't the whole purpose of a portrait to show you at your best?
3. Shave. Again... portrait.
4. Your location is just fine, but the sky is blown creating a distraction. I would suggest that next time you kneel down, and frame to eliminate the sky through the canopy.
5. Fill flash to fill in those shadows a bit.

I had a huge rant to go with this, but I will (for the most part) keep my mouth shut. I will give you the short version though:

If you want serious critique of your work, put your best foot forward. Do not include a laundry list of reasons that the image is not good, and then expect people to make the effort to help you out. My first thought was "If you really don't think it's very good, and you made no effort to correct the things you felt were wrong, then why did you post it?"

Post with confidence. Choose the images that you can say "This is the best I can do right now. How can I improve to become even better?" If you can't say that... why post it?

Sorry it's harsh, but I've seen a lot of that lately, and you're receiving the lashing.

Hahaha, no that's fine! Like I said, I was just killing some time.

I could PS the lens distortion, but my vision really is that bad and it actually looks like that IRL because of the lens that is in my glasses.

I'm not a huge fan of smiling anymore since I have braces.

Definitely agree about cropping out the top of the sky, I just forgot to until after the fact and need to go back to do that. Kneeling would have been nice except for the fact that it was rainy out. Just not a good day to shoot..but at least I had fun. :)

Thanks guys!

I remember my high school years and that this happened to kids with braces a lot....they'd get the braces and never smile...at all. At the time I always figured it was simply because they were in so much physical pain from the braces (one of the reason's I never got them myself!). Please remember that a "smile" doesn't have to be a big toothy grin. Just a plane ol' "happy look" without showing any teeth would have worked better than what you have here.

Just a thought,
Jim

I didn't notice the distortion in your lens until someone pointed it out, but it is very distracting.
