I got a new 50D/EF-S 17-85mm kit on Sunday, but when I was testing how the AF performed in low light conditions, I noticed that whenever the top AF point was illuminated (in both AF point selection and AF point confirmation), there would also be a small patch of red light right above it. I didn't notice it right away in bright light, but when I was shooting in the dark the patch was clearly visible whenever the top AF point was illuminated. I can see it with and without my glasses, whether the camera in in portrait or landscape.

I'm guessing this isn't normal, and that I should get it exchanged? I've never noticed this before playing with several 40D and 50D models. Everything else about this camera is great so far.

Thanks!

It's not uncommon. There have been several threads over the months/years on here about the same thing with 40D's and 5D's. Certainly my 5D and 40D display the same 'glow' around one or more of the focusing points.

............incidentally, I sent my 5D into Canon for an unrelated probelm and mentioned this 'glow' in the letter to them. On return of the camera they included a note saying the glow was not a defect and therefore not repairable.

Just to tack on to this thread.. I have noticed:

1. - My 50D also has the glow, and so does my older Rebel XT...

2. - My question is, I notice that some of the edge focus points in the viewfinder are not completely lighting up when selected... They blink red ect.. but are not nice and fully filled with color say as the center most ones.. ? Almost like the LED light is mis-aligned or something?

Has anyone else noticed this? I don't care but sometimes when working outdoors.. it can be a challenge to see if it is on or not... thank god for the green dot in the viewfinder in addition...
