Hoping someone can answer a question for me:

One of the lenses I'm selling has approx 5 months left of warranty on it. A potential buyer pointed out that Canon warranties are non-transferable, so I shouldn't try to promote that as a plus for the item.

Negotiation strategy on his part, or is this true?

I've heard that Sigma warranties are not transferable, but have never read anything about Canon doing the same (and I doubt it)...

It's true, they are not transferable. However, some folks just get the receipt and impersonate the original buyer.

All they need is the receipt and they can get service. No way Canon, or any manufacturer, could deny warranty with proof of date of purchase. Person putting in the claim could just say "it was a gift"

I have never had a problem taking a lens down with a receipt in someone else's name.

as long as the waranty card is not fill out yet, you can send in and register as :"gift". I have about 4 lenses services at Canon Service Center in Irvine via this way.
