This question is specifically aimed at the 40D, but if you've got input for any other model (except the 1D's) I'm sure someone else could use the ino.

Anyways, What were the worst conditions you have used your 40D with out extra protection (i.e. Rain Covers).
I have used the XTi in very light snow, but I want to know what kind of abuse the 40D will take.

Any imput would be great, and yes I do know that these cameras are not supposed to take abuse.

I've taken my 40D into light rain before without protection but did keep it protected with my shirt was much as possible. The xxD series are pretty tough but definitely not close to the 1-series.

Taken the 40D in to mild rain on a boat with 24-105 F4 L attached for about 10 mins. So the lens is technically weatherproof. I wiped off water as often as I could. The fiancee had a 400D with her and she was also in the rain and that survived too. I have taken the 400D tramping in New Zealand up the fox glacier in the south Island and was caught in rain. The camera stayed in the bag the whole time but the bag was soaked. Had a 17-40 F4L on it and it survived.

Its very hard to give an example of what I am talking about. So I am going to post a photo to show how much rain on the camera. That was at the start, but it wasn't extreme rain.

A few years back I had my old 10D on a tripod for a full half hour out in -32C (25 below F) temperatures. When I took the camera back into a warm environment , instead of condensation forming on the body, I had a coating of white frost that I could scrape off with my fingernail.

The camera worked fine and suffered no damage.

This was taken with my 30D in heavy rain. It had the 17-40 with a protective filter on, so the lens was weather-proof, but not the body. It was in the weather for about a minute or two, but the rain was heavy. You can see there is water on the filter. The camera suffered no ill effects.

I think the lenses will be first to cause a problem than the 40D body

30D and 20D have been out in rainstorms with no cover. I was surprised how wet they could get without any side effects.

They've also shot in -40 degree weather without a hitch.

tough little cams.

bring a small hand towel and wrap the camera body with it when shooting in wet weather and you should be fine. hood+filter on your lens should keep the front element safe.

1D classic has an insane amount of weather sealing. One of the main reasons I got it, for those nasty shooting days.

I took this photo - in medium rain and was out in it for about 30minutes from light mist drizzle to light-medium rain with some of it with cam under shirt. This shot probably shows the rain and seaspray the best - 40d with 24-70 i think - which is good too as the big hood does well to protect water on the front element...

the cam got fairly wet and i just dried it off and she never missed a beat.

I've taken my 20D and my 350D for that matter into pretty hostile environments.. Wet season monsoons in 34 degC temperatures without any hassles.. Also dusty hot conditions..
