One of the theories about the orgin of this phrase comes from the days of sail. On a fighting ship a "monkey" was a device used to hold cannonballs in a stack ready for loading. While some were made of wood, it didn't wear well and an iron monkey was impractical because the cannonballs, which were also iron, would rust to it. For this reason some monkeys were made of brass. The only problem was that, in cold weather, the brass would contract more than the iron and the cannonballs would fall off the monkey, giving rise to the expression... John

I see his corrections and see the value in it...I'm just wondering how he (or you) determines what's correct? The shot in the example was before we got wise to shooting in tungsten gives us pretty much the WB we want. Curt generally sets and synchs all our shots as one of the last things before converting, depending on the theatre he sets it from 2800-3000. A lot of it is personal preference and our background in theatre. We know good lighting adds a great deal to the drama. kumatron wrote in post #6707336 My sunset today Pretty, is that Green Bay or Lake Michigan? Permagrin wrote in post #6705104 oh it looks good! I couldn't believe how many very stylish women in Hawaii had decided to go with gray. I'm hoping mine looks okay too. Tomorrow is the big day for the cut. I hope it makes you feel better. It'll probably be rough for a while but really beautiful in the long run. Permagrin wrote in post #6705434 I'm at a crisis. I've finished the series I've been reading. It's so hard to go from one series to a completely different one...and finding an intermediate non-series book that is entertaining is also difficult. (see...I'm an equal opportunity anxietist...) That sucks. Be glad you aren't me though. I'm 11 books into a series and the author died before he could finish the last book. And, each book was almost 1,000 pages. cfpackerfan wrote in post #6705596 *cringing* Here is one of the 'formal' shots from the 50th Anniversary shoot. You know, the one where my lights were set up wrong. ![]() I'm sure the people will be happy with them. Remember, only photogs notice the details...as long as everyone seems happy-is and is in focus, they won't care. Permagrin wrote in post #6705739 Terri, I've only read (in that genre) Anne MacCaffrey books. I'm more of a mystery/suspense reader. However I'm totally willing to inspect new authors (especially clean ones) I'm not into voyeurism either I like Anne MacCaffrey. Another interesting series to me is the Incarnations of Immortality series by Piers Anthony. It follows the incarnations: Death, War, Time, the Fates, Mother Nature, Satan, and God who all happen to be normal people who just get those jobs by chance. It's a neat series and a pretty easy read. kumatron wrote in post #6706145 We went to Door County today and saw a couple of lighthouses, but it was so so so cold (literally little lakes froze between setting out this morning and coming back) we spent most of the time in the car! I love drive by photography!! Shot the most beautiful sunset! I'm so excited to get home and see the pictures! *thrills*Nice. I've only been to that area once but it was lovely. kumatron wrote in post #6707336 My sunset today ![]()
