First really nice weekend of the year and the birds are out en-masse in our garden, including many Goldfinches all here for the niger seed feeder.

Lost some highlights beyond recovery on the head feathers. Damn. Can't complain about the sun though, not in this country, so I'll complain about my own exposure skills instead. And the subject sat on the ugly end of the perch. Oh well, more to come this spring I hope.

It's hard to believe that there has only been one post to this thread in over three years. Sheesh! I would have thought that this lens would be much more popular than it appears to be, given its extreme versatility and relatively low price.

I want to thank Cyber Dyne Systems - a.k.a. Jake - for bringing my attention back to these lens sample threads.

Anyway, here are a couple recent images I shot with my Sigmonster. . Both are uncropped. . The Black Skimmer is at 434mm and the Golden-mantled Ground Squirrel is at 687mm, both on a Canon 1D Mark 4.

Fate has put another copy of this lens into my hands. A very good price on a like new DG copy popped up as i wait for an EOS R-5 to make it's way across the country to my door. I figure between the R5's IBIS and it's ability to AF with all kinds of small aperture, a 1600mm f/11 lens (with 2X T-Con) sounds like it might come in handy :)

I hadn't forgotten, but I was still unprepared for just how heavy and long this lens is. It makes my 500mm f/4 look positively economy!

I've still got mine. I might move it on in the spring to make way for something long and white because believe it or not I've never owned one of the Canon super-teles and I feel an overhaul of my kit coming on.

Congratulations, Jake!

Yes, the prices on this lens have really fallen in the past few years. . It is an amazing value, compared to other premium quality long lenses. . There really is nothing else like it, inasmuch as versatility at very long focal lengths. . I wish you the best as you enjoy your 2nd stint with this lens!

Here's a pic of me using the lens to photograph some of my local Loons, and then one of the photos I took with it. . I love being able to shoot at 800mm, but then being able to zoom out, because 800mm is often too tight for a lot of wildlife and bird opportunities.

Man, I'd love to get those Loons in their summer colors. I get them here in MD in the winter months when they don't have those colors.

Wow Jake! These are both excellent shots!! And stacking two 2.0 TC's are amazing! Hand held or on a tripod? I am thinking tripod because of the weight of the 300-800mm.

I am guessing your TC's are of the Canon brand, although I thought I had read a while back that Canon TC's were also NOT stackable.
When I bought my Sigma 150-600C I bought the 1.4 and 2.0 both Sigma brand but sadly found out those are not stackable.

And I would love to have opportunities with Canvasbacks and Wigeon like you have in your state in the winter. . Let's trade! . If you come out here in May or June, you can stay here, and I'll take you to my Loons. . They're quite cooperative. . And then I'd love to over to Maryland for your wintertime Cans and Wigeon on the Choptank in Cambridge. . Deal?
