If the light was closer to the tomatoes, then the light fall off would give less exposure to the rice. Better would be to shoot in RAW & extract two exposures & blend them in PS (photoshop). Personally, I would take two differently exposed images & blend them in PS. The histogram in one of them should show no blown whites. Thank you so much for the adviced.
