My "Brinner"... For dinner this evening, I had potatoes o'brian with pico de gallo, half a fried polish sausage and creamy scrambled eggs. Yum!

Composition is boring, lighting is flat. next time whey dont you try using rule of thirds and angling the light more.

Thanks for your critique.

Composition is just how I served the food onto my plate to eat, lighting is just the overhead florescent lights in a drop ceiling in my kitchen and since I shot this handheld with my 90mm macro lens, I couldn't hold the camera any higher to even think about the rule of thirds. I did center the plate horizontally though when I cropped from the original 3:2 ratio to 5:4. I think rules are just guides, not laws anyway.

Dinner err Brinner tasted great though...

DonJuan, while the quality of your shots is greatly appreciated by many, I imagine that some may be hesitant to take that critique to their hearts. Anything can be said in a constructive and encouraging manner :)

Even though your critique was unsolicited, it didn't bother me. I didn't find it instructive to me however. As I mentioned in my last post, I couldn't very well adjust the lighting angles or anything else about them since they were attached to the ceiling and as for the composition, including whether or not I use the "rule of thirds", it is subjective and merely a matter of personal preference.

You're saying you couldn't move the plate anywhere?

There's high-toned commercial photography, and there's "Look what I cooked today." Sometimes people want to take a quick shot of their meal and settle down to eating it before it's cold. Not saying this was navydoc's situation, but it's possible. The frequency of negative comments about amateur/hobbyist food shots has made me reluctant to post in this thread. Maybe we ought to have two threads for general food photography: professional and other.

Hehe, I just started to post that I couldn't move the plate anywhere, at least to improve lighting for a photograph because I didn't want my "brinner" to get cold! :-)

Could be a good idea. This more often that not feels like look what i had for dinner thread. A pic of your dinner does not translate as food photography in my opinion.

A pic of dinner is literally food photography, though. The source of conflict, I think, is the difference between "food photography" and "food photography." Those who come for the former don't want to see the latter. The two types share a thread because there wasn't always a dedicated food-photography forum.

I figured that navydoc's brinner photo was meant to be casual. If he'd wanted to emphasize the artistic side, he would have used a different plate, without such a distracting strong design.

Any suggestions for titling a spinoff thread, and which kind of photography shall be spun off?
