Really like this idea and most of the implementation but for me the burger is too dark and the bright beans grab the attention instead.

I concur. I definitely tried to rush it too much. I was starving and wanted to eat more than I wanted to get it dialed in. I have only been giving this food photography a go for a few weekends now. I have a lot to learn.

Think about setting up the nuts & an empty bun to rough in the lighting long before you cook the burger. ; )

LOL... I actually did set it up before hand. I shot the bowl and a bun, to get the focus and lighting started. I should have added a small white flag just left of camera.

I think it's safe to say that I've done better. Both tasted great though

You're off to a great start! Keep up the good work. Also if you're interested in food photography it doesn't hurt to go to some restaurants and ask to shoot their food for trade. You shoot their food and learn and they get the images. I started this way with a restaurant out here

A grab shot from a local Italian place. Was so dim that I thought there would be enough ambient to not drop off so quickly. Was pretty suprised to see how this unintended dark style worked out.

You really lucked into some nice light in that one! I especially like the highlights on the meatball & sauce. So many food images lack those.
