I am wondering would not it work better with the focus on the slice and the rest being out of focus?

Probably, but I missed that opportunity due to being hungry :D

I set the focus before cutting the cake and already took a few shots. Then I cut it, moved the slice around and somehow forgot to refocus

Constructive criticism and editing always welcome.

I used the cherries and added raspberries and strawberries to make a dessert.

Brilliant!! I love this real, parallel angle. And I have the same camera and lens you used. Can't wait to try more food photography in my new kitchen!

Thanks for sharing!

Requested extra lettuce this time around and this addition made the sandwich so much more visually appealing. Was joking that if I had a spritz bottle I could have sprayed the tomato. ;-)a

What are your thoughts with water droplets on produce with sandwiches? I can't recollect ever having water droplets on food items brought to the table at any restaurant. Cliche?

I wouldn't want to see them. Droplets on whole pieces of fruit, for example, suggest coolness and freshness. They can be visually appealing. But serving wet lettuce to a diner is just wrong.
