Hi everybody! My father just offered me either his 40D or his 5D. I don't really know which to decide on so what would you pick and why?

5D: superior image quality and full-frame sensor
nicer bokeh than 40D even with same lenses
better resale value (if you can ever let it go)

but - the 40D is a very nice camera and has a few advantages over the 5D (newer higher-res sensor - larger files, live view etc), so either way you will do well
ive got a 40D but if i could afford a 5D i would def. buy one too

5D 'cos i already have a 40D :) :p ;)

5D is full frame and 40D is crop with a mental frame rate.

btw welcome :D

5D, even though I like the shutter action of the 40D.

The 5D has better IQ, and feels nicer somehow from an ergonomical viewpoint, to me anyway.

Kind regards, Wim

Depends on what you will mainly be shooting. 5D is better designed for portrait and people shooting, whereas the 40D is better suited for action shot. IQ of the 5D is awesome. Its pros are full frame sensor, amazing image quality and very nice high ISO handling. 40D handles high ISO well, has a 6.5 frame per second shooting rate and a faster auto-focus mechanism.

I personally would go for the 5D if offered

HRemick,
Welcome to the forum :)

Both are great cameras, I know as I own both ;)
I personally like my 40D better, as it has more features and give more on the telephoto end because of the smaller sensor. The 40D would also be easier to get used to for a new DSLR user, as it has many preset modes the 5D doesn't. In prints of up to 16 x 20" I have with both cameras no one can tell the difference between the two cameras.
What lenses would you get with each camera, as that could alter the choice :)

Good Luck with either :)

I would take the 5D.

I've owned both, and while the 40D is an excellent camera the 5D is better. IQ from the 5D is unmatched by the 1.6X format bodies.

LOL!

So Dad, what do you advise?

ROFL. That's great. And I'd take the 40D, because the higher speed (6.3 fps) and better autofocus (nine cross sensors) mean more to me.

Dad advises the 5D. I think this is a "purer" camera - if that is the right word. Of course, the transfer doesn't take place until Dad's 5D mkII arrives....

Tell your dad that I'm willing to get adopted if these are the kind of gifts that he gives out.

If price is not object (as in your case) take the 5D it is worth twice the 40D.

If you don't like it, sell it for $1500 and buy a 40D and the 17-55 f/2.8 IS.

TaDa, I'm willing to consider it if you bring your lens kit...and you've already graduated from college.
